PLEASE NOTE: This thread is NOT about whether it is RIGHT or WRONG. There's plenty more of those threads on here. This is just to discuss a theory that I came up with. A theory is all it is. A theory that I believe. As much as they have the American right to burn the Quran (whether it is right or wrong), I have the American right to voice this, and you all have the American rights to agree or disagree (if you are not American, I still feel you have the right because I believe all Humans are equal regardless of religion or nationality, and all Humans have the right to feel the way they do about something and PEACEFULLY voice their opinion on it).
So, with that disclaimer out of the way, here's the Theory:
The man writes a book. He lives in Gainesville, has a church with only a few dozen followers, and is a nobody. His book isn't selling. Even if everyone in his church buys one, he's only made a grand or two. He turns on the TV and sees the Phelps (not the swimmer, see: Westboro Baptist Church, "God Hates Fags", disgusting people) family on TV raking in the dough and getting tons of publicity.
So he comes up with his own idea. He'll burn the Quran.
Puts together a press release and sends it out to some news outlets (easy to do, I've done it multiple times my self for clients, anyone can do it for fairly affordably).
Voila! Gets publicity world wide, sells books (and now Coffee Cups and T-Shirts!)
Greedy Capitalism at it's absolute finest:
Step 1 Find Controversy
Step 2 Implement it
Step 3 ?
Step 5 PROFIT!
NOTE: I do not know how many books he sold prior to this whole commotion, I am basing on an estimate of the fact that no one even knew who the hell he was until now.
Well, that sounds like a perfectly reasonable explanation.
Love the internet meme reference. PROFIT!
I believe he's also selling hats now.
I wonder how much his sales have increased.
Maybe I need to come up with some crazy plan like this.
I konw!! I'll burn his book!!!
I was thinking of doing that. I'll be up there on Saturday anyway. Might as well toss one of his own in the pile. Of course then he would profit =/
And like you said, you have your opinion/theory. To me, it's just another religious book the world is rid of.
It will never be gone.
There's digital copies of everything now.
You can't get rid of them.
It's just not possible.
and down the Memory Hole it goes, never to be heard from again, right?
no book should be burned, even books we don't agree with. they are ideas...thoughts...philosophies... Man's ideas, thoughts and philosophies. what if someone had decided to burn The Pyramid Texts, some of the oldest (and most sacred) writings in the world? -poof- they'd be gone, up in smoke. i think we can only understand ourselves when we see where we came from.
It is easier to say 'don't get worked up' if it isn't your sacred text. But there are some things like hanging nooses, or Nazi symbols, or whatever pushes your button--that are hard for some people to ignore.
A pretty terrible publicity stunt then. Do you think it matters if they do it or not now? I mean do you think the outcome will suddenly change if they don't do it? Unless of course they come back and say they were wrong but, that is not very likely.
Not as bad as the one where those people had the kid hide and then let a balloon loose and said their kid was in it.
No I am feeling pretty sure that this is much worse. Though that guy pissed me off. I just shake my head.
troulbe is video of the event will be playedover and over again of the incident to innocent and naive young Muslim men
Sounds like it could be a possibility. It is a terrible way to become known tho. To do something "good" would be a better publicity stunt. Ya know, the way he is going about it, would make me NOT want to buy his book. Buying his book after that stunt would be like an approval of his actions.

If an Islamic group was burning the Bible in a public demonstration then yes, there absolutely would be outrage. Anyone who doesn't think so is delusional. Remember, this isn't just one person burning a book in his basement, it's a 50-member church making a public spectacle of their Islamophobia.

How is it fair to judge one group by the actions of a few, but not others? For example, there have been Christian people here who paint all atheists the same. they point to the few who put up hateful billboards and say that is an example of how atheists are. We aren't and I find those signs...
