Too bad I have little idea of what I want to make my website about, or better yet the name.
Do you guys recommend that I make a website ASAP, or wait it out a little? I can probably generate a lot of traffic from Hubpages alone. What do you think?
I'm not sure how domains work, along with a couple other things holding me back, If anyone can help give on what steps I should take next, I would really appreciate it.
I know my Uncle's and cousins have their own website and domains. Can I use their domain? I haven't really asked and I'm really not sure if I can even do that. I heard you can.
I would recommend not getting in over your head. If that helps.
It will certainly be over my head. lol. Thats why I'm posting on the forum, its been on the backburner on my mind for quite some time I don't mind being in over my head, because I can learn anything, but I'm not sure if I should or not. Maybe its even harder than I think.
I do have a lot of time on my hands and know people who could help me, but I really hate asking for help from people I know.
I understand that there is more money to be made with my own site, which is why I'm interested. By no means would I ever stop posting here, its been impressing me so much. And I highly doubt I can get myself first page without Hubpages.
I do have some experience, and I am very good with computers, I learn everything I know by doing it myself. It is the only way I learn anyway.
I'm pretty certain Cagsil was trying to tell you that you need to do a lot more reading and research before you're ready based on your original post.
I've done plenty of research on making websites, but I just haven't worked on making one.
Assuming that I have more knowledge than it looks like in this thread, but not much more. Is making a site worth it at this time?
The thing is I will never learn it if I don't do it. I will be in over my head for a bit, but thats what learning is.
I'm more or less confused about domains, I'm not sure how they work exactly.
Just don't pay more than $9.99 for one...
Ranking your own website is a huge issue for most. That's all I am saying. There happens to be a lot of information about doing it and many different places have conflicting information with regards to doing it also.
I'm not doubting your ability to learn or anything like that, but Website maintenance is much more than HubPages maintenance.
I think Sunforged and Thisisoli would be the best people to talk about it.
The last sentence is the most helpful Cags. Well they all have been. I was under the impression in your first sentence that it is not easy, lol.
You are right there is a lot of conflicting info, and thats why I really don't like using the search function.
I don't really like bugging people, so hopefully they'll come around and post in here, if they feel like dropping some knowledge on me.
ATTENTION SUNFORGED and THISISOLI - Listen Up - You're Attention IS Needed Here!!!
I hope that helps.
website hosting >10/month

domains $7-$12 a year

Your own sites require much more attention to organization, interlinking, off site linking, design, advertising layouts and functionality/speed than you ever would bother with as a hub author.

Like Oli said, if you are starting a site its best to have all your ducks in a row as to what you will be creating(if your goal is income creation) it takes much longer and much more work to get most sites off the ground.
On the other hand - 10/monthly and a yearly reg fee of around $10 isnt a very big investment compared to most businesses you could be considering
Thank you Sunforged and Thisisoli.
I wasn't even sure if my message would be seen.
LOL Cags you have special powers or something. Thanks.
I am going to do a lot more research before I open up a website, I was more or less.
Thanks for the info this is more than enough to get me started. Really appriciated. I do know family members that own some semi-successful sites like I said, but I don't want to come to them unprepared.
Would you say that owning website is a very profitable good idea, something that I should no doubt persue?
Thanks a lot everyone for your responses.
If you're going to use wordpress as CMS and don't want to spend money on thesis or genesis framework at start then i suggest using twenty ten theme. It is free default theme from wordpress team.
http://2010dev.wordpress.com/
It is very easy to customize this theme and it looks similar to child themes of thesis/genesis framework from which most designers usually build further extended designs.
Hostgator has baby croc package at cost of 4.95$/Month for single domain hosting. If you're going to focus on single website for now, this is a nice package to go with.
its not for everyone, I enjoy building websites and I find the process to be profitable.
I believe the failure rate for new websites reaching profitability is around 93% ? Most people quit before ever making a $1.
Try it out - see if its enjoyable for you.
I had the convenience of learning much of the web skills I needed while being paid for related client work, it can be quite time intensive learning, testing and trying.

First of all, I want to say that I am not considering leaving Hubpages. However, I am seriously considering starting my own website/blog, in addition to keeping my HubPage account. So, here's my understanding on how to go about starting my own site, bear in mind I don't know a lot about it: Buy and...

I know that several hubbers here set up separate web sites under domain names they own themselves. I would appreciate any feedback or advice on the best way to do this especially for people (like me) who aren't total techies but do have basic web experience. Which web hosting services do you...

I read the success stories, but are there any hubbers that make 1000s on here? Curious on ones potential.\I know "some" successful full-time affiliates make 1000s from adsense, but any exclusive to hubpages?
