         back in the day they were seen as metal by some, the video for the madison square garden show describes them as metal, though from a modern point of view it's easier to say no, hard rock though? hell yeah!

            And Led Zeppelin III was primarily acoustic with a ting of country and bluegrass to it. But you are right that many see Led Zeppelin as part of the genesis of Heavy Metal. I think metal started with MC5 and Blue Cheer. But Black Sabbath put heavy metal on the map.

               Primarily acoustic but with some hard hitting tracks nonetheless, well, two perhaps.. Ever heard The Immigrant Song on How The West Was Won? Brilliant! A good deal heavier than you might expect too. The only problem with that album is the amount of post production work that went into it (apparently).

         Back then (early 70s) I think it's fair to say there was no such distinction. LdZp certainly has to be credited for helping to start metal though. Proof: Communication Breakdown, the Immigrant Song, Heartbreaker, and Dazed + Confused to name some.

    "Heavy Metal" is hard to define nowadays! So many variations.
    
    As far as what I listened to most and owned way-back-when, I can't pick just one:
    
    Judas Priest - tied between Screaming for Vengeance and Unleashed in the East
    Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
    Rush - 2112 (does anyone else think they're metal? I call it "math rock," now)
    
    As far as what I'm still listening to:
    
    Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy (Although I would categorize LZ more as Hard/Blues/Classic Rock)

    Poison: Look what the Cat dragged in, Open up and say Ah, Flesh and blood, and Swallow This Live. (The Double CD Live set)
    
    Def Leppard: Hysteria and Vault
    
    AC/DC; Live at Donnington.
    
    Cinderella: The best of Cinderella
    
    Bon Jovi; Slippery when wet, New Jersey
    
    Gun and Roses; Appetite for destruction (Love Paradise City!)
    
    Aerosmith: Big Ones; Little South of Sanity
    
    You might be interested to know that I have seen a majority of these band live, with the exception of Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Metallica, Gun's and Roses, and AC/DC. But, I would love to see AC/DC I hear they put on a great show.
    
    But, I will tell you one thing. Nobody puts on a show like KISS! Aerosmith and Poison would come in pretty darn close.

       Motley Crue was always seen as kind of a hair band. But unlike most hair bands they definitely had some good metal chops. Dr. Feelgood is an out and out kick ass tune !

       Nah, that's not true, think of Tool- if you can bear the strange noise in between awesome tracks, and Pantera- the groove man, the groove!!!
       
       If you like Black Sabbath, the you may like Down (Phil Anselmo of Pantera fame's next band), who are basically the next step from Black Sabbath anyway.

          Pantera has become very cliche in my opin after Vulgar.
          Tool I never really thought of as metal and again thought they were much better 15 or so yrs ago. Alot of the bands I hear now I feel sacrifice creative style in favor of production style, but that's just me of course. I always preferred the grittier, simpler stuff. Iron Maiden for example: my preference is in the 2 studio albumns Paul D'anno sang on even though their sound is mainly identified in Dickinson's tenure with the band.
