Hub Followers Question

   I was reading Bendo13's question about people following others to make you follow them and then drop you.
   
   I am not understanding how having many followers can help a hubber? Today I got new follower and someone left me as well, I do not know what I done. Maybe they did not like my hubs or something.
   
   I really doubt it if you have 50 followers, all them are reading your hubs and content as I have seen not all followers read and comment on most hubs.
   
   I have followed mostly everyone so far, including new hubbers with score of less then 30 as I like their hub and I want to encourage new hubbers, being new myself (3 weeks).
   
   What is proper etiquette for following and not following other hubbers? So much to learn and little time. Thank y'all.

      Followers are worth little or nothing - they are more of an ego boost.

      Generally, the idea is to follow people whose Hubs you think you might want to read.  A lot of people don't follow for that reason, though.  Some follow someone they think they may learn something about Hubbing from.  (Someone new who wants to write product Hubs may follow people who write that kind of Hub, so they can see how they do things - that type of thing.)
      
      People aren't supposed to expect automatic reciprocal following, and they're not supposed to follow just because someone else followed them. 
      
      A lot of people will check out what kind of writing a new follower does.  If it looks like the kind of stuff they might like to read they may follow the other person back.  What can happen, though, is something like this:   Someone writes all Hubs about gardening.  Someone else follows that person.  The first person checks out his new follower, discovers that the new follower wrote six articles on gardening, and thinking, "I think I'll follow this person back."  Months may go by.  The new follower never writes anything about gardening again, and eventually the person notices the follower has switched to writing about robots and video games.  That may make the person who "followed back" "unfollow" the person (because he has seen the person doesn't write about gardening stuff as much as he thought he did).
      
      You can follow who you want to follow for your own reasons, but generally, the idea is that you'll see when those you follow write something new; and you may like to read it.
      
      Sometimes someone follows people, thinking the people will automatically follow the back.  When they don't, the people "unfollow" because all they were looking for was followers for themselves.
      
      The main benefit to having a lot of followers is that when you write something new it's likely at least some of them may read it and comment on it.  Comments help your Hub, especially if you comment back and the Hub shows more activity happening on it.  (At least I think that helps a little, but maybe I'm wrong.)  As far as traffic goes, traffic from inside HubPages doesn't count the way traffic from search engines, outside HubPages, does.
      
      Basically, the only real etiquette is follow people you want to follow without expecting them to automatically follow you back (and without saying, "I'm a new follower.  Now  go at look at my Hubs."  ).     Also, in general, don't make a habit of just following people because they follow you.

         Wow, Thank you for taking time to write such a detailed response.I really appreciate it.  I suppose what you said make100% sense.
         
         How about people who write about various subjects such as poetry to products, would someone just unfollow them too?

         I was just thinking aloud.  Shouldn't have typed it.  It was the you follow me, I'll follow you thing - personally I find it a bit irritating.

            Nothing wrong in thinking aloud or should I say typing aloud. I do that often too.
            
            I actually liked Barry's topics and hubs hence I followed and yes as a new hubber here, I might be naive about it but then again I like many subjects and I learn from many people.

   I have new followeres every other day ,then someone will leave,probably because i dont follow them back,i dont really worry i tend to only follow those who can help me with their writing or if they have really good hubs.
