What do you think was the biggest story of 2010?
My choices may reflect a regional bias (U.S.), but for me it was:
1) the BP oil spill
2) the resurgence of the Republican party in the November elections (and the nasty election campaigns)
Haiti too
Under Entertainment
Engagement of Kate and Prince William
and Justin Bieber, LOL
Assange/Wikileaks -- setting the agenda for internet freedom curtailment
Yes, the Haiti earthquake was a huge story.
And wikileaks has definitely been one of the biggest stories in the past few months.
I feel horrible. I forgot about Haiti being in 2010. Seems like after a couple weeks, it was no longer a big story. sad.
For me regionally (UK) it would be the first coalition government of my generation and increase in uni tuition fees but nationally either the oil spill or Haiti earthquake.
Definitely number 1 the BP oil spill.
Wolfbrother, i'm with you on the tuition fees, this has been a major story in the news also
Oh, the Chilean miner rescue was a riveting one, not necessarily important in scale but a great human story.
The JetBlue flight attendant's "great escape" was the stupidest non-story story of the year... really says something about media and society today. Forget Haiti and the oil spill...
So...many big stories...in such a short time: 2010!
I would say the BP Oil Spill...although I know they (BP) wish it would just disappear into obscurity...and folks wouldn't mention it.
The next question...based on what big events that have happened over the past year(s)...is what big story lies ahead for 2011...could be kind'a scary...if you look at it in regards to recent years...as to what might happen next!
It'll definitely be intereting to see what happens next year... hopefully mostly good things.
I'm just glad there's no elections in the U.S. next year, I can't deal with all the negative campaigning everywhere, the endless mailers, calls, emails, tv ads...
Good one! Probably didn't get as much attention in the media as it deserved.
They never do, unless there are enough vested interests at work. It made me feel like crying though. As did the miners of course. Triumph over adversity.
Great question and all the major ones have been listed.
BP oil spill ranks #1 in overall magnitude.
The Chilean miners story #1 human interest story.
Haiti earthquake response was big, but the cholera outbreak (in my opinion) is a bigger story.
SF Giants winning the World Series was pretty huge (regionally, anyway).
The tea party phenom... (hopefully a flash in the pan).
Well said Mighty Mom.
The cholera outbreak is not getting much coverage in the media, sadly.
And yes, the Tea Party was a big story this year.
Speaking of baseball, here in Texas it was major news that the Texas Rangers went to a World Series and actually won a game. I never thought I'd live to see that. When the Rangers went to the World Series, I told people that those in hell are looking for electric blankets and space heaters because they'll need 'em if the Rangers win. LOL

I thought it would be a neat idea to award Julian Assange the Nobel Peace Prize for 2011 - if he's still alive of course - but it seems I was not the only one to have the same thought - the Russian government has suggested it already - 2 Peace Prize Winners imprisoned - 1 in the USA (he ain't there...

Is this the biggest sweet potato that you have ever seen? That is a normal sized apple sitting next to it in the photograph which I took. The sweet potato tipped the scales right at 2 pounds and 7 ounces when it was officially weighed.

Conspiracy theorists and religious fanatics seem to me to have much in common. They look for one grand theory to explain everything, so they don't have to deal with the fact that life is chaotic and often senseless. It's a demonstration of an existential void that they try desparately to fill.The...

Just curious to know what do you think is the biggest crisis our world faces today. There seem to be so many. Some recent like the oil spill, others obvious like the war or health care. Some local crisis like the rain fall in TN. What do you think?

"At 5pm EST Friday 22nd October 2010 WikiLeaks released the largest classified military leak in history. The 391,832 reports ('The Iraq War Logs'), document the war and occupation in Iraq, from 1st January 2004 to 31st December 2009 (except for the months of May 2004 and March 2009) as told by...

& what do you think about Julian Assange? Do you appreciate what he is doing or is it the opposite? Is he the main man or just another pawn, playing the role of a show man? I did not knw much about him until recently & I personally felt that the rape charges were side effects of his actions...
