    Hi-
Just curious, what it takes, who decides, and on what basis, how the hubs featured on HP home page (prior to signing in) are chosen.

    It's a science, really...

    1. All the titles of every hub, are printed out on a little pieces of paper.

    2. These pieces of paper are put into a big pile

    3. All my hub titles are found, removed, and placed in a separate pileā€¦ where they are burned in an environmentally friendly way

    4. A man named Al Gorithum (i think he is originally from Jordan), then reaches into the pile and randomly picks out a hub

    1. DzyMsLizzy profile image85
DzyMsLizzyposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Well, then, I want to personally meet this Al Gorithm guy, and threaten him within an inch of his equations!

I notice a lot of the same Hubbers are featured over and over, so I reject an explanation of any 'random' aspect to Mr. Gorithm's calculations.

I'd like to see the criteria installed in Al's numbers system.

Apparently, I'm on the front page twice, DzyMsLizzy.  I had no idea until just now.  After reading your thread, I decided to take a look.  If it's any consolation, I did no lobbying and I wasn't informed about it.  I'm very appreciative, but I'm as mystified as you are.

      I'm curious, too, now.
Do you think there's anything particular that might have got those two Hubs there? I know you say you're mystified yourself, but maybe you've thought of something by now.

No, I can't think of anything.  Naturally, I'm grateful, given the bump in traffic, but I have no idea of why they were chosen.

        1. viryabo profile image94

I wonder if they get a 'bump' in traffic because they are there.

They are there because they got a 'bump' in traffic.

          I wonder.

OK--I want to know if HP moderators or staff ever read these posts....and if so, I'd like an answer from one of them!   A full explanation, please, of how this system works, since I am obviously not the only curious one.

    1. Bronson_Hub profile image61
Bronson_Hubposted 13 years agoin reply to this

      Me too!

What I suspect may be the case is a situation similar to the computer taking over in the movie i-Robot.  That might explain the absences of HP moderators/staff replying.  Either that or it's the weekend.

I had a history teacher in high school who used to tell us he graded tests by putting four stamps on his dog's paws:  A, B, C and D.  Then he spread the papers on the floor and let the dog walk all over them.  To give you the benefit of the doubt, he'd give you the highest letter grade the dog stamped on the paper, and if the dog didn't stamp your paper at all, you'd fail.

I bet it's a method that is something like that.

And I'm pretty sure that admin will never totally explain how it works, because then you've given a way for unscrupulous people to game the system.  So keep dreaming, DzyMsLizzy...

    1. DzyMsLizzy profile image85
DzyMsLizzyposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Unfortunately, I'm sure the unscrupulous will always be with us....but it would be nice to know a little bit... like, is it subject matter? or volume of 'hits' ... so we could at least aim there...without cheating..

      wink

I have wondered if they just use the photos that are already in the hubs they feature or do they ask for a special photo to be sent for the featured hub?

I've had a hub on the front page - they just use the picture in the hub. The photo in my hub was rather attractive, so I think that may have been an "eye-grabber" that caused them to use it for the HubPages front page. I'm a newbie, so my traffic and earnings aren't enough to justify it. Eye candy and a well written hub might be enough.

On Blog TV people get featured randomly

  17. profile image0
    Stevennix2001posted 13 years ago

I think it's based on the traffic of the hub if you ask me. I remember when I got my "Dangers of Facebook" hub featured on it once, it was during the time it garnering a lot of traffic.  Now that the traffic for that same said hub is barely sputtering at like 10 or less a day, you'll notice it's no longer featured anymore on the main hubpages site. that's why i think it has a lot more to do with the amount of traffic a hub gets that causes hubpages to feature it.  at least, that's my theory

    1. Beth100 profile image70
Beth100posted 13 years agoin reply to this

hmmm... I don't know about that.  I've had some hubs hit 100 with a consistent high volume of traffic and not one of them has been featured.

I also have some with a large number of comments but no go on the features either.

Frankly, I can't recall ever seeing one of mine on the featured list.  yes, I've been on the topic list, but not in the banner.

Makes ya think, doesn't it??? hmm

Just changed the photos for my Travelling Alberta hub.  We'll see what happens.

The question is:  will this work for hubs that have been already published?  Or, will only new hubs with good eye candy be picked up?

    What do you think?

    1. camlo profile image83
camloposted 13 years agoin reply to this

I'm going to try on a couple of my existing Hubs, then pay very special attention to the photos I use on future Hubs.

No it won't change anything!  - This 'Eye Candy' theory is not correct!  I Always use excellent pics, write well on the hard subjects and wear chocolate bar shades - which are messy, but really Cooooool  hahaha!........... Nope Nothing!

As I Have said before... This is a Case for The BIG FINGER!
Perhaps, it is more than a Casting Couch issue huh?
Perhaps, the concern really should be who gets all the tracker %s that are Hidden at the top of our pages and also invisible when WE are logged in.. not to OUR SE Traffic that WE Generate!  - I think that is an issue that deserves a considerably more transpirancy !
Both issues are Major Negatives on this site!

It's simple really.Make the check out,a one followed by how ever many zeros you can afford[this ties in to how badly you want to be featured],then sign the check.Mail it to;Box 309 Mt Pleasant NY 10666.Works quite well!I also recommend this method for gaining followers and getting them to comment on your hubs! The more you pay them the better the comments!I should know...smile
