I have read the scant info on copyright infringement that I was able to find here on the site, as it pertains to our works on Hub Pages.
It all seems to deal with other hubbers copying content.
Are we also protected against our material being swiped and posted elsewhere online? Does Hub Pages have an official policy that I may quote to such an entity?
I remember being told, somewhere along the line, that since we retain the rights to our work, and HP has an interest in protecting our copyrights, that placement of the copyright symbol on each hub is unecessary. I now doubt that.
This is a mixed-bag, emotionally, for me. The site that copied my content (not just an exerpt, but the entire article) DID leave my name attached, and their site is very directly relevant to the topic of the article; (in fact, I provided a link to them within my article for 'further reference'). I am in one sense flattered that they found the article worthy of use. (A second site about the same topic also found my piece worthy of referencing, but they simply provided a link back here, for which I am grateful.)
While I was at first delighted to see my article at the top of the first page on Google, that delight turned to dismay when I saw that the link went to thier website, and not here! In the long run, that hurts me, Ad Sense and ranking-wise.
How do you suggest I proceed? I have an e-mail to them saved in the draft stage, and I would like to get it out today. Any info or suggestions ASAP would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
It is customary indeed compulsory to cite sources in Academia between Academics Worldwide. However this does extend to reproducing the article in full without the expressed written consent of the owner. I strongly suggest in future that if copying occurs written approval is sought and given otherwise various copyright laws that are breached will be enforced.
Not really.
HubPages has an official policy that is in effect on this site, as that is what they own and control. http://hubpages.com/faq/#copyright
If you are arguing your copyrights elsewhere, then you'll have to use copyright law in your quotations. If you don't understand what your rights are, http://www.copyright.gov/
As we, the authors, retain all rights and ownership of our original work on this site, we have ALL the responsibilities for protecting our work outside of HubPages. They (HubPages) have no interests or responsibilities for what goes on at other web sites. And in case you've never read it, the following statement is placed at the bottom of every single page on the site,
"Copyright © 2011 Hubpages Inc. and respective owners. All rights reserved."
You are a respective owner, so that phrase covers you.
Thank you very much, relache. That is the information I needed. I knew I read that we retained our own copyrights when writing here; that much was in the basic information.
I guess I did not notice the bottom of page stuff, as I get so involved in writing the article and designing the capsule placements. LOL
Thanks for the other link, as well.
Cheers!
Copied content has been discussed many times in the forums. Try some of these threads.

Hope you find what you're looking for.
If you write something, it's automatically coprighted by copryight laws. A HubPages policy is not necessary for that because it applies to all written work.
Thanks for confirming that. That has always been my understanding.

There are no new topics under the sun, so they say. Well, these days people have become creative in stealing other writers' content without acknowledging them.I came up with a title for my article about 4 years ago. I don't remember whether my editor made some changes to my title. There wasn't any...

I noticed today that one of my best articles (that really needs a rewrite) has been duplicated on a website called PetRadars.com. They copied everything from the title to the comments, though they left out the poll and all but one photo. They list on the bottom that they duplicated the article...

OK--so, I have a new Hub just about ready to publish. I read it to my husband, and he brings up the following concern (I quote him directly):"Since you're talking about Star Trek, and naming characters and devices, don't you need to worry about copyright infringement?"The hub...

If any content of the hub is being copied by someone and used elsewhere, its not the fault of hubber. This is nice that HP is motivating hubbers to file DMCA to the concerned site and take appropriate action, who is going to waste time to fight with the copyright violators. HP has witnessed...

About once a week I peruse my hubs to check on traffic, comments, and just generally see how things are going. One of my hubs, "What Are The Benefits of Eating Bananas," had the copyright symbol next to it. I know from past experience that this means hubpages has found my content...
