I need help with keyword development

   I am preparing a new forum for a launch. Normally this isn't a particularly difficult area for me, but the forum is very specific to its niche (Christian Women). Furthermore, the topics the forum covered aren't indexing effectively in Google (including on other sites). When I do a search, for example, for "pregnancy forum" I come up with one topical result even though I am a member of two other pregnancy forums that aren't getting listed!
   
   Can someone help me to come up with some keywords that would be relevant to Christian women, so I have somewhere to start?
   
   Forum topics include:
   
   Faith
   Prayer
   Proverbs 31
   Bible Study
   Marriage
   Pregnancy
   Parenting
   
   And of course there is an off-topic area that I expect will work itself out when I have a member base.

   I'm not looking for a developer, actually. I have enough understanding of how keywords and search engines work to handle it on my own. I can't seem to get the "attitude" out of the written tone but it just isn't there. You're going to have to trust me on this.
   
   I know that I'm looking for keywords that are popular but not competitive. I have been reasonably successful in this with my two other sites (one which was shut down recently). In this case I think I might be approaching the situation incorrectly.
   
   So I need to do one of two things: Repeat this question in the religion forum to get some brainstorming ideas...
   
   OR...
   
   I need to change the way that I'm looking at the problem. If the problem is the medium (a forum) rather than the keywords, then I think I can work with the site a bit better by moving some things around (since I haven't launched yet).
   
   Do some topics just take longer to get attention than others? Certain Christian keywords are completely saturating the internet right now and I'm trying to avoid those.
   
   Okay, I'm frustrated and stressed enough at the moment that I might need to leave it alone for a bit. I have been working on posting material on the forum and in my personal blog, but I haven't been doing any kind of planning until today.

   A keyword is a keyword from my perspective. A lot of people see christians as a pretty easy target. I mean - if you believe the stuff you say you believe - you will pretty much buy anything.
   
   So I would think all the "christian" keywords are pretty competitive. There was a recent forum discussion about that, but I can't find it right now.
   
   I would have thought a properly built forum will be just as easily indexed as anything else and might provide some "off the wall" keywords.
   
   Not really sure what you are asking for if you are happy with the research you are doing. I would have thought a wander through the religion forum here will give you a few ideas.

   Good point... I hadn't thought about it from that perspective, Mark, thanks. I will do the "wandering" as you suggested.
   
   Generally speaking a forum indexes as you suggested. I have never, ever seen a problem like what I encounter with women's forums. They are very difficult to find because they somehow seem to get sandwiched between topics that are totally irrelevant. Or maybe I'm doing the wrong searches for the forums I'm seeking? I suppose that, too, is possible.
   
   ETA: Do you think I should change my approach and focus the keyword topics on marital and parenting issues, as my hubs are here?

   I think going round the forums is a great idea, I have also compiled a list of 125 keywords in Excel around the keyword you mentioned including advertiser competition.....this may not be useful... I dont know!
   
   Christian Woman Keywords
   
   100% means loads of competition and 0% no competition.
   
   Also with forums I have noticed that many end up getting alot of non targetted traffic because the topics dont always sit in with the actual theme of the forum...off topic areas for example.
   
   I had a friend with a forum on WW2 who was getting traffic on people who wanted to find escorts (of the female variety)! This was because someone in the forum had wrote in the off topic section about wanting to sell their Ford Excort car!!

   If I don't have Excel, is there any way to open that file?
   
   I love non-targeted traffic, to be honest. I've gotten conversions from it in the past with forums, and it's converted me a time or two when I was looking for one thing and came up with something different!

      pick up a copy of openoffice from openoffice.org so you can open excel files in the future

      and yes the christian market is very saturated I wouldnt imagine it will be very easy at all to rank. But so is parenting and so is "pregnancy forum"
      
      Forum programs have seo-plug ins too, look around they are usually free at the application forums

      You could try Open Office as an alternative to Excel, it's free to download and as far as I know all the Excel files are interchangeable with it.

    I am busting up laughing right now! I checked the stats on the site and all of the searches being done are for "adult" sites (I'm being forgiving here!).
    
    I've had 94 hits in April, which isn't bad considering that I'm not launched and haven't really been working hard at this. So then of course there is only one that uses a word that is even anywhere on any of my pages, and that is "motherhood." With it is "animal motherhood" and I'm wondering... Well, I'm wondering. I got three hits from that search term.
    
    Talk about getting some strange keywords going! I need to hunt around the site to see if there is *anything* to indicate it's a porn site!

    I'm going to have to try to dig out some keywords that *will* rank. I know that it isn't going to be easy, but I have some ideas that I know work based on some research and former sites. "Submissive wife" can work pretty well with people looking for something... well, different. Even if they just click out on ads, that's revenue.
    
    Conversions are what I need to work on right now (visitor to member, that is). I have at least two people who I think will be willing to join the forum and I have resources to find others, but I hate to "steal" members like that!

       One caveat - only 15% of my traffic comes from search. I used to focus solely on SEO and keywords and I don't any longer. I focus on creating content and don't have time to worry about keywords so much. Hope all this helps (but that Google tool is amazing as you dig into it).

    Just add to the forum topics regularly. Search engines like fresh and new content. Use social bookmarking to make the pages crawl for atleast 3 times. Once it is crawled 3-4 times it will show up in SERP's. The important thing with new websites is to have patience it takes a lot of time to get into top SERP's.
