why do you think Buddhism is the right religion to follow?

   I come from a catholic country and family, and have grown up with catholics thoughts and beliefs, however, the more I grew up, the less it appealed to me. I started reading about buddhism and from what I've gathered, which is not much really, it has to be the best one, because it helps so much with the journey of life, rather than living by the 10 commandments to prepare for the next one...is anyone willing to share more knowledge/experiences?

      Its the same thing, the essence is  the same both the Buddha and Jesus were enlightened ones. Buddhist meditate in order to enter into a state of samadhi or union with god and so do the Christians. Early Christianity was about  remote and difficult to reach monasteries where one would meditate.

   I actually live in a Buddhist centre. It's located in the centre of my city, and houses Buddhists who become friends and share their faith with each other. It also holds weekly meditations and prayers, both privately and for members of the general public.
   
   I'm actually an atheist (which they are aware of and have no problem with so long as I don't bring meat or alcohol into the centre, which I do not) but my experience of the Buddhists I live with has been that they are very generous, giving people. There is a real family feel to the place, and everyone goes out of their way to help each other. I feel safe with them, because I know that they'll look out for me if I need help, and all they will expect in return is similar kindness should they ever need help from me.
   
   Of course, not all Buddhists are like this. No religion is perfect, and every single one has its fair share of good and bad people. But I can say that the Buddhists I know are very good people.

   Its teachings about meditation are things that can be practicaly experienced. I like there ideas of nirvana and levels of consciousness.

   wow how nice to live with them, must be quite an experience and I'm sure they teach you a lot of things, I like their teachings too, I hope I'll be able to spend some time with some Buddhists, just to see their way of living, with its pros and cons

   Hmmmm, another thread to collect sentiment and support for a religion. Religions in general have good things in them to help their followers feel grounded. Atheism has these qualities as well.

         I don't think Buddhism is the religion to follow. I think all philisophical and spiritual lines of thought should be examined. This is a stew that everyone contributes to.

            well,  all religions have very similar basic concepts, and mostly man-made in my opinion, the thing is I don't like a religion that pushes me to abide by certain rules, so that I will enter heaven or whatever..I believe being a good person is just something that should come naturally,

   Some people would consider Buddhism more of a psychology than a religion.
   On another note, the intent is to achieve a state of mind as an actual experience of bliss and one.
   A problem with Buddhism as it is taught is that its purpose is thought to be progressive or superior perfection, when in actuality its purpose is to produce the greatest appreciation of the present moment as it already is.

      Native American spirituality does the same. Once everyone stops arguing, and they figure out what it is really all about, christianity does the same, if taught from the perspective of Jesus, to the exclusion of all others, such as the disciple Paul.

   Buddhism curently is one of the worlds most peaceful and apparently gentle religions - so if I had to . . .
   
   However, it is worth noting that Buddhism also managed to get out of hand and went on the rampage in China at the end of the Tang dynasty causing an internal war from which came Kungfu. We went a couple of years ago to Shaolin and the Kungfu schools that surround the temple there.
   
   The backlash was the destruction of many Buddhist shrines when it was finally suppressed.  Hard to imagine those peaceful guys in saffron robes getting aggressive

    I don't think there is a right or wrong religion to follow, but Buddhists tend to be more open minded and accepting of people not involved in their religion. Peace and respect are high priorities, and in my personal experience, they don't annoying shove their views down everyone's throat.
