Let me guess...   You're a guy who has had a kidney stone (or you know a guy who has had a kidney stone), and you've been in some conversation with a woman (who has had a child or more) about how bad kidney stone pain is (and she's said it isn't as bad a childbirth)?    smile   (Maybe that's not the case, but this kind of question is one that shows up often enough "in life" that's it's kind of a "real classic" one that's now kind of humorous to me.)

I've never had a kidney stone, but I've had other stuff that has caused unbearable pain (and sometimes fairly minor stuff).  I just don't think you can compare childbirth pain with any other single-cause pain.  It's apples/oranges.  There's a whole range of different pain that goes into childbirth, and the intensity and duration varies within that.  There's also the baby factor, the emotional factor, the worrying something will go wrong factor, and a whole lot of other things that go into it.

As someone who has had children, and has had a few medical "situations" that have caused serious pain; I've never compared the different types of pain even "to myself".  I've always found that when a medical "situation" causes severe, severe, pain; it makes a big difference how long it lasts.  I may find the first day or two miserable-but-bearable.  By the third-day I'll find I'm wearing out and less able to tolerate the pain graciously.

So, I guess my answer is that there is such a thing as unbearable, unbearable, pain that has nothing to do with childbirth; but childbirth is pretty miserable too.   It's too unique a kind of thing to be able to compare it to anything else (which is why I don't even compare my own different times of pain to it).  I do think there are woman who have only experienced childbirth and a few other kinds of serious pain who don't have a clue about how bad some non-childbirth pain can be.  So, I know this doesn't answer the question, but I just don't think there's much point to getting into one of those "Who gets more 'paint points'" discussions (if that's what the purpose of this question is).   smile  Besides, even two people with the same medical condition can have different degrees of pain (and no two women or even childbirths are the same either).   hmm

I had one labor and delivery that lasted 2 hours that was quite bearable.  It was the "uncomfortable" thing they always tell new moms.  I had a 25 hour labor pushing out a 9'2 ounce son that was extremely unpleasant (the process, not the result) and my fourth labor, my daughter was facing upward.  It was only 8 hours but I honestly think I would have shot myself in the temple if someone would have given me a gun, just to stop the pain.  The fourth was the only one I asked for pain relief on, and it was denied for lack of an anesthesiologist.

So my answer a man with a kidney stone might win over labor 1 and 2... possibly even 3.  Having my skin flayed off with barbed wire however, would have been preferable to 4.

I've yet to have a kid...im only a kid myself, 17. But i have suffered through passing kidney stones this summer, they hurt! My doctor told me that it was as if i was about to have a kid, i had the contractions, the throwing up, i was put on extreme medication. So.. i would say i hope a kidney stone is worse, at least i know now what the pain is like!
The only sad part were two things, no little joy came out and the hospital bill!

I have not had nor a kidney stone nor a child birth but I always heard that both are very painful, more that other things. However the pain is a personal experience and I do not think that we can compare our pains with someone else's ones.
