How do these hubbers maintain a presence?

    hub:
    /hub/Non-Destructive-Testing

Just wondering like if there's anything I can do as a user to "hop" older hubs or something. I often come across hubbers with extremely low hub scores (like 1 or 5) and I was wondering if HubPages has a tool to like find these hubbers and then like manually check their hubs to get rid of them.

I know that a low hubscore doesn't necessarily mean you're a bad writer, but c'mon, if your hubscore is 1 and you have hubs, something's wrong.

You could use something like hmmm I have no idea what language HubPages is written in, but if you could support Ruby, I would totally write you an open-source.. hell, you could have it, all yours for proprietary purposes... app that would like comb the database for you and find hubbers that have hubscores of like 1 or whatever number.

I mean, I could use the nokogiri gem to open pages and comb for http://pastie.org/private/xfilhturi7cyldzi8fqssa
All I would need is like an index of hubs or hubbers. What I was initially thinking of doing is crawling the site via http://hubpages.com/topics/ however a lot of hubs either may not be showing or the lowest possible hubscore is like 45 or something. Furthermore, this would be a lot of unnecessary crawling because an author can have many hubs and I'm really looking for authors with an authorscore of 1, not looking for particular hubscores.

Plus, I didn't want to be like ummm well you'd all be like "this IP is doing some strange stuff, sorry Melanie, you're booted."

However, I could make it, test it on my own website and write it with rubydoc or rspec or something so that you can take my uber crappy code and make it teh nice. Whatev.

But anyway just noticed the above user on the site and it sparked an idea I had in like July (got the git repo on github to prove it. Teehee.) You don't have to take me up on it. I'm just bored. tongue

I often wonder how they maintain there presence here too. I often check a hubber I might know of to be surprised that they are still here after months of being on a score of 1. I don't understand it. I was never comfortable being below 90 let alone having the lowest score.

    Start here:

    http://hubpages.com/authors/best/?page=22937

    then keep hitting previous...

Best Hubbers arranges in high to low... page 22937 is the last page.

  3. mel22 profile image59
    mel22posted 12 years ago

You could use MelissaBarrett's link also by replacing /authors/ with /hubs/ in the link and work backward also if you wanted to manually look at each low hub score rather than author score

  4. MelissaBarrett profile image59
    MelissaBarrettposted 12 years ago

yes, but in place of the 22937 place a much larger number... the page number should auto-correct to the last page available on the list (at least if you're using google chrome)

Edit:  looks like the best hubs tops out at page 100... sorry.

an even better idea would be to send a suggestion to Hubpages to allow the tabs to toggle from best to worst or latest to earliest or hot to cold just by clicking
Edit: maybe i'll do that right now or at the least allow the user to sway past more than four pages at a time to get to lower hubs quicker

    1. MelissaBarrett profile image59
MelissaBarrettposted 12 years agoin reply to this

That would work for hubbers, but it would still only include the top 100 pages of hubs which would likely all be very good.

They would need to open a separate grouping for worst... which would not be the best PR move they could make.

It could be internal, so that only staff would see this option. For all we know, they already have this option.

I've seen sites like redditt and digg  use the toggle option for best and worst so it would be doable... i wouldn't mind seeing some of the work in the 60's and 70's ranges get some better attention ( if it deserves it ) or at least have the option to be found quicly rather than searching through tons of profiles and titles that interest the user based on subject. As an example I like economc articles( yeah, I know boring to others )  but the only articles on that subject with enough attention would be by 'Chuck' simply because his hit the 100 mark so quick. It would be nice to just skip to some hubs in the upper 70's and start reading the ' off the mark' hubs sometimes without having to specifically use cloud tags(tab pages i guess they're called) Since Hubpages uses a linear Tag Cloud rather than an actual cloud, i think they go highly unnoticed at least internally.(for reading purposes) I would be more inclined to use tab pages if an actual cloud of tags were there to noticeswirling around and it might even keep external people from ' bouncing'.JMO

In response to Melbel, the language Hubpages is written is does not matter as we can use an algorithm i.e. check hubbers score then cross reference that with the hub feedback and check that age is older then "N", soemthing along those lines.  Anyway, I believe that Hubpages is meant to be mostly self sufficient.  It is the responsible hubbers who should alert the company when we believe a hub should not belong for whatever reason.  However, since the Panda update, hubpages could do with deleting many hubs that bring down their serps ranking.

    melbelposted 12 years ago

Done. That was a fun script to write.

Savva Pelou, correct, but if HubPages were to have a script for their use, it would make sense that it would be in a language familiar to their engineers for upkeep. No use in them learning a new language just to accommodate a tiny little script.

      Oh, the script. Derp.

      http://pastie.org/private/ufupdzc6s67bbzzysuew
      Should be fairly self-explanatory
It's not really umm full of features, so-to-speak, but that's what you get at 4:30 in the AM.

It would need to be expanded to do more pages automatically, which would be fairly easy. Move to previous page until author score > 5 (or whatever you would set the limit to.)

The script essentially puts the urls of hubbers that have a score of 5 or lower into an array.

      Edit: Ruby 1.9.2p290

true.  I checked out your script, very simple and effective, love the labelling of "naughty hubbers"  what if we extend the script to give the hubbers a final chance by bumping them up in the queue for hub hopping, then at least people get a chance to flag up the profiles for whatever reason. Also i would put a date range in the if statment i.e. if older then 1 year

        1. melbel profile image93
melbelposted 12 years agoin reply to this

I doubt anyone in the queue would be up for immediate deletion. Perhaps just in for moderation. Users in the list, I believe are only those who have hubs. If you have a hub, regardless of how new you are there still is really no reason you should be ranked a one. But I suppose maybe if their oldest hub is older than a week. (Really, after a week if your hub hasn't dragged your score up by x points... it's just so easy, even for some of the spammiest spammers, to maintain authorscores at least in the 40s.)

Perhaps instead of direct to moderation, to keep the load off the staff, it could send it to a pre-mod hopper, perhaps another program for hubber volunteers/rabid_hubbers/hub_addicts/raving_mad_hubbers... whatever it's called. tongue

hmmm this calls for a new accolade, honourary hubpages staff badge!  Send all these hubs into a bucket to be scrutinized by the elite hubbers (hubbers with a score over N whom have also indicated their subject choices).  I think we are on a winner Melbel.  A bucket where the fate of the Hubs are decided (obviously only real HubpPages staff can do the unpublishing or deletion) but this would certainly help HubPages with search engines.

My Scores bounce around so much I would have no idea where I would rank. The more I publish on any given day the worse my score becomes.  I am trying to limit my publications and post more to the forums now.  And it has worked as my score is starting to rise again.

Definitely don't limit the number of hubs you publish because of it's effect on your score. When your hubs age a little bit, you score will shoot back up. Just keep hubbin', that's where the money's at! tongue

I am going to take your word as sage since you are a 95er but it does get discourgaing typing and writing you heart out only to see you score drop.

        Thanks

You'll not only get used to it, but it will drop less as you and your hubs get older.

Remember - the only number that truly means anything is 75 (or is it 70 - doesn't matter, you likely will never see it).

Keep on trucking.  Or hubbing.  Or both.

JT, as one who has lamented their score a lot I have to tell you not to dwell on it. IT WILL DRIVE YOU CRAZY!

Your score will fluctuate a bit but very soon it will shoot right back up. You might be surprised when it flies over 90. As soon as I decided to stop worrying so much it shot up and fluctuates a few points every few days but basically between 93-97. I publish quite often.

                Hi Cardisa,

I watch you publish and I see you. Your are quite prolific.  I admire your work a lot.  I am not in your league but I respect your work.

Sounds like there needs to be a thread for those who are neurotic about their hubscore.  My hubber score is eqyuvalent to a "B" or an Asian "F".  I hate "B's" or Asian "F's" even worse.  I am goiing to try to follow your advice and let go of my concern over my hubber score.  It will take some practice though.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom.  I have stopped publishing because my score kept dropping.

                Thanks JT.

JT, I too obsessed so much over it that I would log in just to see if it went up and would get really anxious when it dropped. I obsessed so much I wrote a poem about it.

JT, we are all writers and I appreciate the compliment, but I don't consider myself better or in a different league. You and I are different yes, but I bet there are things you write about that I couldn't begin to imagine. Don't sell yourself short, we all have out talent.

Well I knew we share a phobia about our score dropping.  That is something we both have in common.

You are too kind.  My you be endowed with 5 extra hubber score points for your kindness.:-)
