New real time on Google Analytics

I got email this morning telling me that "We’re excited to share that the new version of Google Analytics will soon be activated in your account. In addition to a redesigned interface that makes it even easier to explore your data, you’ll also notice some significant new features. Here are a few of our favorites."

So, when I logged into Analytics, yes, I saw a link for "New Version" and clicked it. That's where I found this new RealTime reporting.

However, the email also talked about "Flow visualization". That's NOT there yet. I googled around and that is apparently confusing other people too. Some have it, some don't.

New interface != all new features, but if you don't have them yet, apparently you soon will.

I've been watching what people from India and Australia are looking at.  A few pop ins from the UK and every now and then some early riser from the U.S. shows up (or maybe they haven't gone to bed yet).

I would have liked to have had this yesterday when I saw a monstrous I/O spike midday at one of my sites.  It's a lot easier than poring through logs!

I got the email last week and have no idea if I am on real time reporting or not. I just recently switched to the new Analytics interface because they kept switching me to it when I wasn't looking, from the old one.

I had just begun to find my way around Analytics too, and now I am kinda lost again.

The Real Time is under the Home tab if you have it.  Flow visualization is supposed to be under Visitors, but I don't see that yet.

OMG I have it!! Off to investigate further!

How fascinating!! At first there was only one visitor,a returning one from Spain (me) who visited a hub I had just edited, then as I watched I was joined by 3 more visitors from Google, and there is a little second counter that moves and tells you how long someone is on site.
I can also see the country they are from and the actual hubs they are visiting.

      Yeah, isn't it neat?

I'm really looking forward to later in the day when there is more traffic.

Do you have the "flow" stuff?  I'll hate you if you do, but go ahead and tell me anyway :-)

No don;t seem to have that whatever it is. You said its under Visitors, the only reference I see to the word 'visitors' is bottom right of screen (active visitors) and there is nothing beneath it.

No, Flow is supposed to be under Visitors in the Standard Reports tab, not under Home.

Thanks for that! Told you I don't know my way round Analytics.

Yes I do have the flow chart, sorry to say. Imagine giving a dummy like me one, what a waste!

Still I better get to studying it, now that I've found it, see if I can learn something.

              Aaargh!

You have it and I don't???

I'm going to write a nasty letter right now!

Or I could just be patient and wait for it, right?

Neener, neener, neener!  I have the flow too.  Now if I could just understand what it's showing me! smile

No time, though - gotta go to work. sad  Have to play with it tonight.

OK, that's it.   I see that tall buildings and high powered rifles may be necessary here.

Google, just because I've said some hurtful things about you is no reason to deny me new features.  Why do you tease me by giving me some new toys but not all?

Is this supposed to be a growth experience for me, Google?  Am I meant to learn something?

Do you want me to kneel down and beg?

And you can see how they came to be there..

Are they rolling this out gradually?  Will they always send an e-mail first?

I found a link that says New Version, but there was no real information on the page it linked to.

PLUS, my account is now identified as "hubpages.com" with my Adsense Code following.  Is that the correct way to identify it?

I'm still getting analytical data about my accounts in the old version, though.

You lose nothing in the new version.  You can switch to it if you see that link.

      The identification tag is unimportant.

I love the new version of analytics, and seeing real-time stats.

I was amazed to see a hub I was working on, that was not yet published, show up.

I had no idea Google could read our unpublished work.

IzzyM, that's impressive (their being able to read stuff that's not even published) - and yet it's kind of creepy in its own way, isn't it....

Oh well...    I like the new Analytics as well.

          1. Pcunix profile image83

They aren't reading it.  You are and that causes their code to run.

Can you please expand further on that? I'm not really understanding.

They must be reading it (OK their bots) because that would explain why a new hub I publishing a few weeks ago had no ads from the moment of publication.

I wrote to hubstaff and they replied that the Google bots must have decided the subject matter did not warrant ads.

But the bot had to have ran before publication to have none from the moment I hit the publish button.

I didn't really think anyone was "human-reading" it.  I assumed it was a "bots type of thing".  Still, mildly creepy in its own way.    smile

Pcunixposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Well, just to make sure you understand: no, it is not a bot.

Every page has Analytics Javascript in it.  No google bot can read your page until it is published, but when YOU read the page, that code runs and it feeds them data.  So it's not really "creepy" if you see what I mean.

I hope that answers IzzyM as well?  As her comment suggests, a way to prevent that would be to disable Javascript (but I think that will bring some editing problems with it, so you probably should not).

Thanks for clarifying.  (I call everything that's "not human" and that's Google-related "bots".  It's just easy and quick (although obviously not technically correct  lol   I obviously need to find another quick, easy, word to use when I'm being lazy. ).  Either way, though, I didn't know exactly what Izzy meant.  Oh well, I've kind of given up on the idea of not having every little thing we do online picked up on somewhere by someone/something.

I went into my Google Analytics and found it to be interesting. I'm going to have to learn my way around it, not that I was ever familiar with the previous version. lol

So far, my best guess (from an Analytics onpage link to questions) for the reason for my blank page is that I need to upgrade to a more recent version of Flash, or perhaps I need to be sure Javascript is enabled.  Neither is a priority for me today, but I will check on those when I can. - FYI, for anyone else experiencing the Blank Page phenomenon.
