Tens of thousands of children have suffered sexual abuse in Dutch Catholic institutions since 1945, a report says.

The report by an independent commission said Catholic officials failed to tackle the widespread abuse at schools, seminaries and orphanages.

Based on a survey of more than 34,000 people, the report estimates that one in five children in Catholic institutions suffered abuse.

Allegations of abuse at a school in the east Netherlands triggered the probe.

The commission began work in August 2010 and studied 1,800 reports of abuse at Catholic institutions. It has identified 800 alleged perpetrators, just over 100 of whom are still alive.

It tried to find out what went on, how it happened and to suggest what kind of justice should be offered to victims, says the BBC's Anna Holligan in The Hague.

Last month the Dutch branch of the Catholic Church set up a sliding compensation system based on the severity of abuse suffered.

The commission's findings have been keenly awaited by the Dutch population, 29% of whom are identified as Catholic...

Considering how long we've known of abuse in other countries, you wonder what took the Dutch so long to investigate.

    That is very sad.

The priests and nuns should be allowed to marry and the government should keep an eye that such malpractices are not made in the name of religion.

Here in the US we have struggled with this for decades - very traumatic, very sad.

The Catholic church in the Chicago diocese finally offered a program called "protect our children". After the Penn State fiasco, Governor Walker in Wisconsin sign in new legislation mandating those knowledgeable about abuse to speak up.

Protecting our children is a duty of everyone. We cannot be quiet. Words are powerful - remember it is words that start or stop wars.

Be attentive, learn the signs...the child you protect may stop the abuse and you may prevent your grand children's abuse.

If priests are allowed to marry; such instances would be minimal.

Jesus got married and had offspring; why should not the priests? Sex is an essential and natural part of human life; why should one be deprived of it in the name of Church.

Quran says that all the messengers and prophets of the Creator God; did marry and have children; Jesus was one of them:

[13:39] And, indeed, We sent Messengers before thee, and We gave them wives and children. And it is not possible for a Messenger to bring a Sign save by the command of Allah. For every term there is a divine decree.

There are people who say they are the off-spring of Jesus physically; why deny them.

First, you can't quote the quran to refute the bible. Not if you are talking to anyone who isn't a muslim.

Second, ego is all that would make anyone lay claim to being a direct descendent of Jesus. It is completely unprovable. Why would we feel inclined to pander to the delusions of a given individual?

Oddly enough, I'm told though I haven't confirmed, Jewish Rabbis had to be married otherwise they could not be rabbis. Jesus was called rabbi on more than one occasion. Mmmmm

paarsurrey, people who abluse children do so because they WANT children.  Marriage does not change this fact and makes little difference.
