I haven't noticed much of a difference, frankly.

Pinging helps your hub - or any other URL for that matter - to get indexed faster. No more, no less.

I don't think pinging helps with traffic.  It's just a way to get the search engines to notice your link so that you can get indexed.

I ping to get indexed which then allows for people to find my Hubs via search. I think it's a important part of promoting. hmm

Two years on here, and more on the Internet, so I should be ashamed to ask this, but...

What's "pinging"?     smile    (and how do I ping?)

Easy, Lisa!  There are a number of places that you can use:

      Feedping
      Ping45
      Ping-o-Matic!
      Autopinger

Pick the one you like best and fill in the blanks.

If you don't like any of these, just do a search for others.

Hey thanks for those links Shirley, never heard of most of them, off to check them out!

Shirley, thanks.  Believe it or not, I've never heard of these places.  I once saw the word, "ping", when I tried to see if I could delete a forum post I made "by accident", and I thought it was a bad thing.    smile

(I don't really live in a cave.  Sometimes I just feel like I do.  smile  )

You're very welcome.  Hey, don't worry about it, I often have to ask my kids or younger friends about stuff like this.  I've learned a lot that way - in plain English for computer illiterate dummies like me. smile

I really don't think you will need to ping if you have some patience. Any Hub you write will be indexed pretty soon (48 hours). Google loves HubPages and hence may index all hubs every day. If you want your hub to be visible instantly then you might want to ping.

Thanks for this info, Shirley. I didn't know about this, either, and my husband works in technology.  Its a running joke in our house about how much I manage to ignore as he talks about what he does for a living! LMAO!

    Anyway, thanks for this.

Thanks for the links but now I have to ask this very studpid question, what is pinging and what does it do and how do you do it?

    1. Lgali profile image56
Lgaliposted 14 years agoin reply to this

ping is like raising the red flag on the mailbox to tell the mailman you have new mail to be sent.  In this case, you are telling the weblog tracking sites
that your site has been updated.

I do not ping. I believe that Google loves hubpages and gets them out there rather quickly. I dont bother.
