The way the republican party is positioning itself it may become an endangered specie.with democrats getting over 90 percent of the african american vote and the hispanic vote heading in that direction, as well as almost every other minority how do republicans plan to win an election in the future?

The rise of elitism and totalitarianism come through a slow process of government expansionism such as we are seeing in our day. The "Liberals" actually boast in the fact that they have come up with more laws than the conservatives as if it is some kind of service they have done for the people.
They want a European nanny state, and that sounds pretty good for all the people who don't want to work to take care of themselves.
‎"liberalism" however, is a key factor which favors the principles of free markets, capitalism, government regulation to promote competition (not prevent it), private property, personal freedom, and individualism. Quite contrary to the modern day application of the term often coupled with the word, "progressive".

I think it'd be great if the Repubs took a complete demise. Then the Dems would rise up for the hypocrites and phoneys they are as well and the same would happen to them. Then maybe we can all prosper with a new order of politics.

Exactly.  That's my point.  Kill off the GOP and then kill off the Dems.  It can only be done in those steps.

That's a good question. The GOP has alienated entire segments of the population, some of which are growing pretty fast.

They still will get half the country.  There are plenty of  foolish people who can't understand why voting GOP is harmful to everyone, including their own selves.

To some extent, yes.  Not entirely, but I'm not going to protest it.

The reason to vote for him is to destroy the insanity of the far right and the libertarians.  Get them out of politics once and for all.

Every sane Republican moderate should register as and vote Democratic from this moment on, holding their noses and letting the world know that they are only doing this to purge insanity from the GOP.  The GOP will either die completely or drive out the crazies - either choice is fine.

When that is accomplished, every sane Democrat then does the opposite: voting and registering Republican while holding our noses.  This gets rid of the far smaller number of Democratic crazies very quickly.

I know people are not smart enough to do this, so it won't happen.  It's just a thought experiment.

The GOP is playing Cronus - eating its own children. When they ignore a sensible candidate like Huntsman and jump on the Newt train, something is wrong. They need to stop allowing the far right extreme to take over. Newt is one of the most disliked politicians in the nation, yet a good chunk of Rs desperately want him to go up against Obama. If the GOP is Cronus, Newt is the angry Ares or the god of tricksters, orators, and thieves - Hermes.

      So STOP SUPPORTING THEM.

Seriously, Habee: moderate and intelligent people like you have not been able to return this party to sanity.  It is therefore time to abandon them to reduce their power.

Hold your nose and vote Democratic and make sure that you let the dem know that is what you are doing and that once another SANE party can replace the GOP, you'll be switching instantly.

It's the only hope we have.  Voting "independent" won't sap their power.  Voting Dem under protest will.

Wish you could have heard the conversation when the RNC called my the other night! I gave them an earful. I told them I wouldn't send them a penny as long as a candidate like Newt was getting support. If Newt's moon colony ever came to fruition, I hope he's the first colonist and that he stays there. lol

I know you don't like Romney, but I'm willing to give him a chance. If Newt gets the nod, I will NOT vote R. I might have to vote for Obama. I would feel a lot better about Obama if he hadn't signed the NDAA. Of course, I recently found out that Mitt would probably have signed it, too, but at least he didn't vow to veto it first.

You know, PQ, I really feel like I don't have a party that represents me now. If Obama wins again, perhaps it will send a message to the GOP: this nation is center-right - NOT extreme right!

By voting for Romney, you will help perpetuate the crazies.

I agree with a lot of what you express, I think there's a chance the republican party can become once again the big tent party if they sink really low in a couple of election cycles and the extreme right wing nuts are not ruling the party any more.that would give even people like me who under the current circumstances would never consider voting republican the opportunity to choose in an election to vote for the best candidate regardless of which party he belongs to.

Short term, I think Obama will win his second term. Long-term, it is the end of party politics as we know it. The statist lie is coming apart by the seams, and it will soon collapse in on itself. Neither the Democrats or the Republicans have shown that they are truly protectors of the constitution and liberty. Rather than the last time the Republicans can win an election, it is probably the last time anybody will hold any value to any election. Anybody who looks at what is happening anyway.

If you're going to vote for the least harmful candidate, let's take a look at what 'harmful' actually means, and the options we have.

'Harmful' against what? The only harm I really care about is harm to individuals, killing, abuse and rape being the worst.

You have Obama, who will certainly start the war with Iran if he is re-elected. That's at least a million deaths, including both sides, if the previous war is anything to go by. He also signed NDAA, which endangers every US citizen with assassination. Not exactly harmless. But the least harmful?

Mitt? Nope. He's been banging on about being too 'soft' on Iran. He also supports the drug war which has been killing millions for decades.

    Same with Newt.

What about Ron Paul? The first thing he can do as President is bring the troops home from the middle-east and remove the sanctions on Iran. That saves thousands of lives immediately. If you're going to do a basic comparison of lives lost and saved, Paul wins over Obama.

    1. Pcunix profile image90

Ron Paul has zero chance of winning.  He's a crazy Libertarian.

      1. innersmiff profile image66
innersmiffposted 12 years agoin reply to this

He is actually really competitive in head-to-head polls against Obama, it is just a matter of getting him the Republican nomination, which is certainly possible. If the Newt V Mitt backlash is big enough, it's only going to go in the direction of Ron Paul. He has the best organised campaign team, and best of all, he is right. Why not support the best candidate?

        1. Pcunix profile image90
Pcunixposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Because he's the WORST candidate of all and most Americans know that.

Libertarianism is a ridiculous and dangerous idea.   Only naive people think otherwise.

Don't let Pcunix wear you down - Ron Paul is tying Obama in national polls. He is VERY electable.

The Mindless Democrats are scared of Ron Paul because they know he's the only one who can beat Obama. But the mindful Democrats love Paul because Paul will do what Obama didn't have the balls for.

In Ron Paul, they see what Obama WAS promising them. But they see it with PASSION. Ron Paul not only promises it, but he has the fire to deliver it. Obama had a Democratic congress for 2 years and did nothing worth speaking of, and now he complains of a "do-nothing" Congress.

Ron Paul WILL be our next President.

It is too early to lock in our votes.  Suppose for a second or two that it looks as if Romney will win in a landslide (unlikely, but let's suppose) would his coattails mean Republicans also sweep the House and Senate?  Would you find that acceptable?  Now, let's suppose the opposite, i.e. that it appears to be nearing a landslide and coattails for Obama.  Would control of all three branches, and a slanted judiciary, be acceptable?

The previous advice on another Hub suggested throwing all the "Do Nothing Congress" out.  That is not only unlikely to happen, but likely impossible because in some cases a former occupant is running against a current occupant and the former occupant was just as "do nothing" as the current one!

Neither party's nominee can do much to correct things, if he ends up with another "Do Nothing Congress".  Sadly, the entire focus right now is on the top spot, when we should be working for "do something good" candidates for the House and the Senate!  The alternative is the "Good Ole Boy System" puts in the party cronies, and we simply get more of the same!

Well now Ron Paul is bashing OWS, he has long ago stopped questioning 9/11, and he signed the most repressive amendment for women to come along in a long time.
Birth control should be illegal? Forced birth by order of the state? Jail for women and doctors?? And he dares to let the word freedom slip from his lips!

He hates gvt, but loves big business.

NO THANK YOU. Had enough of that type of governing.

TO the larger question, demography is pointing in a direction that would seem to spell trouble for the Republican party if it wants to remain a major national party.  Maybe they will go the way of the Whigs -- from whence they came.
