I like to watch the real time analytics and where visitors come from. Lately, I've been getting views from the middle of the ocean, just West of Africa and a little under the horn. Google maps doesn't even show an island there.
These views have no keywords and no town listed. No referral. They come in groups, with maybe 4 or 5 visitors that rapidly all leave after a few minutes. They seem to be covering all my hubs, one at a time.
What in the world? Will I soon find that each hub is now copied somewhere in Nairobi or something?
Weird! Perhaps a floating hub pirate ship! Now if the searches originated in the Bermuda Triangle it would be really interesting!
I actually thought of a cruise ship or something like that, but doubt that analytics uses GPS or something to find location. I think they just go by the ip and where that is.
I know they have me in the wrong town; I'm actually in a suburb of Boise, Id. but analytics shows my own visits as Boise. Interestingly, they had me in a different city for a few weeks, but it then went back to Boise.
Google takes its readings from the server that sent them the information. (I think).
When I was in Spain, sometimes according to Google I was in a major city about 200 miles north from where I was, other times I was in an area 200 miles to the south. I was never in the major metropolis nearest my home.
Now on the west of Scotland, they think I am in a town south of London in England, about 500 miles away!
I'm thinking a pirate ship might well be true for your location mystery, one that carries a server possibly powered by satellite, but catching traffic from elsewhere in Africa.
I'm sure you're right about the server location, but that leaves the server in the ocean off of Africa. Kind of a mystery!
Wilderness, maybe it came from a ship somewhere. I think pirates have internet these days...sorry couldn't help it.
But ships do have satellites. And, sometimes there are tiny islands that are not on the maps. It could also be a submarine.
If they were islands they belong to a country but they show as no location
It's probably ships as pirates won't be interested in my hubs
I had this, its some bots from amazonasw (I think that is right), Apparently this can happen after you have tweeted- they will go right through your hubs- I noticed it as I was on analytics on an incredibly quiet day and it went manic.
I emailed Team at HP to let them know and they said just to look out for any odd click patterns, which has not happenned- this was about three weeks ago and all seems to be well.
Yes, I had that, too, except from facebook. But these aren't a huge number, maybe 20-30 per day instead of hundreds and they stay for a while as well before moving to the next hub.
No odd click patterns (yet), but that's a good idea to watch for.
I have a funny situation on traffic from one of my blogs...I posted two articles on my blog - one on chocolate and one on beer. The one on chocolate showed a huge spike from Switzerland and the one on beer showed a huge spike from Germany...Cannot be a coincidence
I get lots from there too. West Africa and South West America (North America)
After looking at your site wilderness, unfortunately, the Narobi angle may be the correct one. On the other hand, do submarines have wifi?
I rather doubt that our sailors would be allowed to communicate while on patrol! Kind of defeats the idea of hiding underwater, ya know?
I do think I'd better pay a little more attention to possible thieves for a while, though. I've had a few stolen, though not nearly so bad as some other hubbers. Maybe it's my turn.
The behavior of visiting all of your hubs sounds like those weird Amazon Twitter bots or whatever that kept swarming hubbers' accounts recently. Maybe they spoof their location? I'll admit I don't closely check the locations of my traffic sources.
I wondered about that, too - I had a bunch of facebook visits for a few days about a month ago, but nothing recently.
I guess they might be able to spoof it, but for what legitimate purpose?
Yes, thats true about being on patrol lol. Hope it's not the thievery wilderness, but to be frank about it, when I see a domain source from certain parts of the world...well, you know.
Yeah, that's the problem. Anywhere else I wouldn't be so concerned, but central Africa? A known hot spot for internet thieves of all kinds. God knows I get enough emails "giving" me money from that area of the world.
can you imagine if they had app for the Bermuda Triangle, sightings? rum? I'll have a coke with that, ty
lol - how about a rum shot and a rum chaser - splash of coke

Hi- I was noticing that the traffic source reports include Twitter and Tweet Grid, but not Tweet Deck. I normally use Tweet Deck, because it is much more user-friendly, and auto-refreshes (unlike Twitter home). Also, as with Tweet Grid, anything posted there does feed over...

Oh the joy of seeing traffic rise ..... I set out to increase traffic two weeks ago and saw it increase by 40% per day.Trouble is ... today, for no good reason, it's dipped 20% below the starting point.Oh such a sad day Maybe the world is holding its breath because my hubs are so awesome...... and...

I've been getting a ton of traffic from a site called k. co .il (no spaces). It looks like a site from Israel and its in Hebrew. It's some kind of internet explorer trivia game. It seems legit, but I can't imagine why it would be linked to several of my Hubs. It's nice to...

Analytics tells me that I suddenly started getting traffic from something called the Maven Coalition. Since I don't have a website on Maven, are my hubs being advertised there? How can I figure out where specifically on Maven this traffic is coming from?

Hi all, I've noticed that one of my articles has been getting lots of reads lately (yay!). But when I go to the Traffic Source link to see the breakdown with the websites, the Daily reads don't add up. I'm wondering if HubPages does track websites outside of the main ones (Google, hubpages,...

I've been noticing lately that HubPages is saying I'm getting a good amount of traffic but the stats on Analytics aren't anywhere near that.Makes me think I'm getting back to how things use to be before the Google slap, but that's really not the case.So for some reason it's counting hits that...
