Who among you have family members with Diabetes Mellitus?

   My parents are both diabetics. I would like to know who among you, my dear friends, have a loved one who experiences the same condition. I would like to know how you deal with it...

      Both my parents are diabetic. I had a dog that died from diabetes and I was borderline while I was pregnant and told I'd be diabetic by age 40. The hypertension I had while I was pregnant never went away and I was diagnosed with hypertrophy of the left ventricle of my heart (basically an enlarged heart).
      
      I dealt with it by completely changing the way I live my life. I became a vegan, and lost 70lbs. I created my own exercise program that I do 5 days a week and I only drink homemade fruit and veggie juice. I also take a regimen of vitamins and supplements everyday.
      
      My blood pressure has dropped dramatically, I'm no longer at risk of diabetes, and I feel fantastic. As for my parents, I've explained to them what I did to reverse my hypertension and diabetes. They have decided to continue their normal diet and take their medications. There's not much else I can do. I can only make sure I continue my new, healthy lifestyle in the hopes that I'll live a long and healthy life. I want as much time with my hubby and daughter as I can get!

         That's very wonderful to hear. You're a proof to many that being a Diabetic means being empowered yourself. The reason I asked such question in this forum is for me to become oriented with various effective ways to which people, who are actually dealing with the diseases, are using. Thank you very much for that wonderful insight.

   Three of my grandparents were diabetic - my paternal grandmother had to control hers with insulin injections. My father was diabetic. My younger brother is also diabetic. I, fortunately, show no signs of the disease as yet. I try to keep my weight at a reasonable level and exercise moderately. My downfall, I'm afraid, is that I'm a chocoholic! It may be a subconscious reaction to the fact that statistically I will probably end up with the disease. Diabetes (type II) today is regarded by my brother as a pest and no more with the medication available (unlike it was for my grandparents). He has to watch his lifestyle but it does not really affect his life in any great way.

      Indeed, he has to watch his lifestyle. Diabetes is a progressive disease that can lead to fata complications in the long run if left uncontrolled. Thank you very much for sharing.

      @Alian346 - being a chocoholic there is a chocolate that you can eat within reason and without the guilt, it is a chocolate bar that contains 70% Cocoa Solids. This an allowable form of chocolate according to most dieticians. My wife is diabetic, and as already mentioned a good diet and exercise plan, will help control it and "cure" it.

   I'm the only type 1 diabetic in my family. I was 29 years old when I was diagnosed with diabetes. Four months prior to my diagosis I had perfect lab results including A1c and Fasting blood sugar. It's crazy how quickly your life can change as a result of being diagnosed with diabetes. However, I will say even though I lived 29 years without the disease I can't remember life without it.
