Last week, I saw a documentary on Kurt Gerron, the noted German Jewish silent movie actor and director.   Mr. Gerron was active during the Weimar years in Germany.   However, with the raise of Nazism in Germany, his career prospects became more limited.   He was given opportunities to leave Germany to establish an illustruous career elsewhere.

Peter Lorre, who went to Hollywood to escape Nazism, refer Mr. Gerron to producers for job opportunities.  However, Mr. Gerron persisted on staying in Germany; ultimately, he had to leave Germany because the situation was becoming quite intolerable to eventually settle in Holland.   Then Germany invaded Holland and transported the Jews east to labor and concentration camps.   Mr. Gerron went to Theresienstadt concentration camp where he was coerced into making a film which falsely depicted the conditions of Jews interned in the camp.   After he finished making the picture, he was transported further east to Auschwitz extermination camp where he was gassed upon arrival.

The lesson learned was that there are signs which to remedy your life and/or leave an unpleasant situation.   Sometimes people are afraid to leave and/or improve a less than a positive situation because they feel safe and/or afraid to venture into a new situation.   Oftentimes, wake up calls comes in degrees of intensity to alert us to get away from the less than positive situation at hand.   We often choose to ignore those wake-up calls before it is too late as Mr. Gerron has done.

Mr. Gerron was given many lucrative opporunities through friends and colleagues who left Nazi Germany to continue his career elsewhere but sadly he did not listen at all.   He was warned by his friends and colleagues including Billy Wilder and Petter Lorre to leave Nazi Germany many times as the situation would only get worse!  These warnings were ignored by Mr. Gerron.  Mr. Gerron portended that nothing would not happen to him if he remained in Nazi Germany- unfortunately, he was one of the countless victims of the Holocaust.

The moral of the story is that oftentimes circumstances alert us to change our lives.  However, we often refuse to realize this until it is too late or near too late.   Let us discuss the issue of the purpose of wake-up calls in our lives!

I pays to listen to our gut feelings and what our intuition is telling us.

I think one of the toughest things to do is be still and really listen to the little voice in your head.  Maybe it's telling you "Go by a different route to work today" or "Get out of that relationship" or "Leave Germany now, you idiot".  Sometimes the little voice is right, and sometimes the little voice is wrong, but I think the worst feeling in the world is to have something terrible happen that you know would have gone differently if you'd only listened to the little voice.

Exactly!   Mr. Gerron was given many opportunities to leave Nazi Germany.  He had well played friends in Hollywood who were more than willing to assist him regarding his career.  However, he insisted on remaining in Nazi Germany, believing that the situation will one day get better.   It did not, instead the situation became gravely worse.   He had to leave Germany for Holland but to no avail.   He eventually went through the concentration camp system.  Even during that time, he believe that by producing a film, his life would be spared.  Sadly, it was not.

However......if Mr. Gerron heeded the advice of his friends and left Nazi Germany, he would have contributed immensely to our marvelous film industry.  This man was a genius; sadly, he was one of the six million!
