Please Help a Sick Dog (Not a Joke)

   As some of you will know - I have dogs, and I love them very much.
   
   One of my dogs is twelve years old with a serious bowel condition which she has been having treatment for over the last few months.  She is on various medicines - one of which is Lomotil.
   
   It is made by Searle and the pharmacy name is co-phenotrope - 2.5 mg tablets.
   
   The BIG problem is that we cannot source any in the UK - there is some manufacturing or other issue.  I don't want to get generic or false or dangerous 'cheap' pills from a dodgy online supplier.
   
   What I need from American hubbers is the name of high street big name pharmacies, reputable, that also have an online presence.  Then I can use those sites with a degree of confidence.
   
   This information may just help a little dog - so it is much appreciated.

      You might want to look in Canada... The three big name reputable pharmacies that I looked at in the US don't offer international shipping.

      Hi Mark, I'm so sorry to hear about your best friend.  I too have dogs and love them dearly as I rescue older and abused dogs who are blind, 3 legs, one eyed and so forth.

      These are some of the larger pharmacies throughout the country.  Would this Rx be something that could come from a feed and seed store here in America?  I'll check around my area as everyone here in the heartland gives their own Rx to their stock, etc.

         Thanks Sarra, and thanks to everyone again.  We thought that the drug was non-prescription but it seems US and other places - the genuine ones - want a prescription.
         
         It is not helped wanting to prescribe a human medicine to an animal.
         
         Our next step is we found an Australian chemist we can ring and discuss our needs.

      Lomotil is available here at Walgreens.com
      It is also sold over the counter (OTC) however, the dosage is milder but maybe you would be able to give enough that your 'baby' needs.  It's a thought.

            Hi Mark.  Checked with the feed/seed stores here that cater to ranchers and they don't have the drug there and I have them checking to see if they can get some so I should get some calls back today.  I'll let you know as soon as I hear something!    Give your 'baby' a kiss for me.

   This may be a long shot but my parents have always used this vet Dr Betty Hughes. She is amazing with animals and never over charges. If you call her you might be able to order from her or she may be able to set you up with a supplier.

   Okay it looks like this is actually not a veterinary formulation, but a human one that veterinarians prescribe off label.  So I will look at human medicine suppliers.

   Okay, this pharmacy only carries the generic but they are a legitimate online pharmacy that requires valid prescriptions. They should accept a veterinary prescription. Might the generic be okay?

   Okay, this might be a better option.  They are based in Israel, but they require prescription and have the non-generic. They get a good grade from the pharmacy watchdogs--although I had never heard of them.

      The only one I know of is 1-800-pet-meds. Mark, generic drugs are usually exactly the same. When my dog got old, many of the meds he took were "people" ones. At least in the U.S., it's not a matter of quality with generics, it's about the greed of pharmaceutical companies. You don't have to be be afraid of generics. I hope it all works out.

         I know that most generics are identical to the name brand but this is not always so. They are not necessarily manufactured by the same company and the manufacturers may not have the best standards. Just recently there was a scandal that the testing company in charge of ensuring that the generics were up to standard was not testing properly and so it is not known if some of the generics on the market are actually okay. Plus always stay away from generics from India and China. There was an expose on a news show recently where they sent someone in under cover to have an Indian company manufacture pills. The manufacturer was actually very brazen about being willing to charge less to put little or no active ingredients in the pills. These were life saving human drugs and packaged in proper looking blister packs, with labels etc, but all worthless.

    I wonder why lomotil only, didn't the vet give an alternative? sorry for this kind of answer, but may I know what is the ailment of your dog> is he constipated?

       Ah no, it's more complicated that that.  It is a gut problem - which she is on a mixture on steroids, anti biotics and Lomotil.  The whole lot goes together.  And there does not seem to be an alternative.
       
       It is not a cure but finding a balance of meds to manage the problem long term.

    I've had good luck with 1800 Petmeds also.
    And just remembered these people. I have their magnet on my refigerator.
    It's been awhile, but I remember Roadrunner people were wonderful to work with.
    Not sure if they can help you with the Lomotil.

    Hi guys - I thought an update might be appreciated.
    
    After I posted this search for Lomotil - Misty got rapidly worse.  She was hospitalised for a few days on a drip because she refused to eat anything, even her favorite treats.  Her weight had dropped from over 10 kilos to 7.3.  I thought she was gone.
    
    After a few days she came back to us with a change in prescription and a new diagnosis.  She probably has EPI - a pancreatic enzyme deficiency.  This is treatable by sprinkling enzyme on her food which helps her digest it.  We no longer need Lomotil because this is a completely different thing!
    
    That was two weeks ago.  A lifetime.  An emotional stress which was almost unbearable.
    
    Misty is now eating and pooing properly, mostly.  She has put on weight to 7.8 kilos.  We are very hopeful of a full recovery.
    
    I want to say I was really touched by everyone's offers of help, interest and concern.  I deleted the hub I wrote about her because the thought of her going downhill again, if she did, and people still making comments would be too much to deal with.
