THE OBAMA's numbers are starting to slip, as one would expect. No honeymoon lasts forever.

Are you making a joke? America won't fail because we remove an incompetent fool who can't even repeat his orders without a teleprompter. America is far stronger than anyone wants to admit. As for "stopping this BS" - we are headed down the road to communism under Obama. If you can't or won't see that, then the only assumption I can make is that you want that and are happy with the resulting loss of liberty that it brings.

Sure, and every new president comes down to earth eventually. The danger for Obama is the longer the economy remains weak the less patience the people are going to have for all this enormous spending and 'stimulus' and takeovers of private companies and such. That in turn will erode support for things like nationalized health care and the energy bill. The economy is likely to pick up sooner or later (unless all this 'stuff' he's doing really does us in), but he'd better hope it starts looking up real soon.

It's part of the whole Febian theory.  The idea to get out of a recession is for the government to increase spending drastically.  Well, in increasing spending, the government gains more control.  Our federal goverment has more power and the states have less power.

I hope that isn't a Rush Limbaugh take on economics, is it, MIJ?

Are there any instances where the situation you describe has happened, but the increase of federal power was temporary--so that after the crisis was over, things were perhaps a bit different, but also not every Republican's largest fear?

The conservatives I read say the past administration was much more responsible for growing big government than any democrat, you know...

I didn't vote for him but it was pretty close at the end. I really liked his presence but worried about experience. While I agree with some of the comments above about him possibly taking on too much, I really think it's goofy how people and the media always make the country's well being out to be one person's responsibility.

There are hundreds of people in our government that vote to make decisions and negotiate to get bills passed. Yet no one talks very much how congress and state gov take the big picture idea and can make a mess of it. What are your thoughts their?

    1. livelonger profile image87
livelongerposted 14 years agoin reply to this

I agree with you. A lot of change begins with Congress; the President just signs bills into law. Whether you agree or disagree with his platform, he has been doing a tremendous amount of things since taking office, in line with his campaign promises.

Well since as of June 23 2009 congress' approval rating was 33% I don't think Obama's the only one getting blamed.  I think that a lot of people including much of the media are just starting to get over the infatuation with him and seeing some of the flaws.

News is a business.  Feelings like being personally 'infatuated' with a candidate usually are not part of selling to subscribers and readers-but then again, they also do KNOW their constituents, wink.  People should try to seek out balanced coverage.  That means reading more than a few publications or polls and trying to analyze politics/issues critically.

I agree which is why I tend to watch, listen to, and read multiple news sources.  I am independent and have more often the not leaned a little left of center on many issues/ candidates in the past.  However I did not vote for Obama because I did not think he would be a strong leader.  I do not agree with the path he is taking the country down and I do not like how congress is blindly going along with him.  Because I do not agree with Obama does not mean that I do not have a full understanding of the issues or that I am not well read and well informed.  That is my main issue with both Democrats and Republicans if you do not agree with them they immediately want to criticize you and accuse you of being biased and/or uninformed.

It was the comment about nationalized health care.  As far as I know, that really does not accurately reflect the Obama plan.

And it was basically spoken as a person who has/had worked in journalism for a while.

  9. SweetiePie profile image82

First off all presidents have rises and falls in opinion polls.  Bush Sr was at the top of his game at the end of the Gulf War, but by the time of the 92 election he lost to Clinton, and that was even with a large number of people supporting Perot.

Some of us made informed decisions when we voted for Obama, and we knew the economy had been in trouble for along time anyway.  Obama is doing what he can with a less than positive economy, and I wonder how people can be so fickle?

Do you really think Palin and McCain would be doing a better job?  I for one am happy to have a president who is once again trying to make us part of the world community, and not antagonizing other nations.  If people only voted for Obama because they were fickle, they are probably let down because they did not think their voting choice through more.

i dont think i know palin and mcCain would have done a better job, you know why because there republicans. Everyone has always said that republicans are for the rich and democrats are for the poor. at least thats the way it used to be. well if thats true and republicans are considered rich and for the rich people then they would still be great to keep in office. you know why because let me tell a secret as to why rich people have money, and this is for any rich person not just politics.its because they dont spend it, obama going and trowing away billions and billions of dollars is not what this country needs. you can blame it all on bush if you want, but ive said this a hundred times and ill say it again. what good is a republican president if everyone in congress is democrat?

SweetiePie is absolutely right: discussing politics (at least in this type of situation, on an internet forum) is like playing a game of circles. I absolutely agree. big_smile

There are some people on here that no matter how hard they try to convince me, I will probably never interpret information the way that they do. wink I know that they will never do the same with my information, either. We agree to disagree, and I certainly respect anyone for sharing their opinion, when done so gracefully.

Obviously, we all have researched information that we base our opinions off of. I find myself rolling my eyes every once in a while when reading on the political forums on here and I know people of the opposite political persuasion, do too. wink Everyone has different information and experiences. That's why there are different political parties and constituents with different viewpoints. That's awesome because that's what democracy is all about!

There are a lot of folks on here that come out and say things to the effect of: "I am so right. You are so wrong, therefore I am smarter than you and you are an idiot."

I haven't seen SweetiePie do that. I don't believe she would, either. Instead, she shares her own opinions, in a very kind manner and I enjoy listening to her viewpoints because they are presented very respectfully. Anything that comes across as righteous or passion-oriented (for me, political policy should only be about facts), is a huge turn-off for political discussion.

        Wa alaikum salam!

        Dear Lady,

Following are the major points which is degrading Obama day by day.

        1) He is totally unable to coupe with the CREDIT CRUNCH.

        2) He has no other plan except NEW MASONIC (WORLD) ORDER for the whole world.

        2) He lied about closing the Guantanamo Bay Jail.

        3) He lied about withdrawing American, NATO or ISAF troops from Afghanistan and Iraq.

        4) He has done nothing to clear the Federal Reserve's debt of almost 8 trillion dollars.

        5) He is unable to trial Bush for his war crimes. Bush himself admitted in his last interview that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and was sorry about his policies. BUSH MUST BE GIVEN THE DEATH PENALTY IMMEDIATLY.

        6) He has done nothing to coupe with the problem of prisons and prisoners of USA which are maximum as compared to any other country of the world.

        7) He has done nothing to coupe with the major problem of rapes that take place per day (almost 2000 rapes per day) in USA. USA also leads over other countries in this regard.

        8) He has done nothing to reduce the maximum number of registered cases of Depression, Hypertension, Obesity, Breast Cancer, Aids ....... (a long list of diseases).

        9) He has done nothing to coupe with the problem of increasing number of illegitimacy (child birth without wedlock).

        10) He has done nothing to revive the family system and bring back the old innocent parents to their young healthy children from old age houses.

        11) He must demote USA's Nuclear Program and weapons before instructing any other country of the world whether Iran or Israel .............

        12) ..............

        13) ..............

The list goes on and on, seems never ending.

First off Obama is repairing our relations with the world community, which is a very important step.  Some Americans say we should not care what other countries think about our actions, but I would compare that to a class buly that simply does not care what his other classmates think.  Basically the Republicans on this thread love to pick at anything that goes against their idealogy.  The Stimulus Package has actually saved some jobs that would have been lost if it had not been passed, especially for those working for the cities and the counties.  There is still much work to be done, but here is a story showing how the Democrats actually have done more good than harm:

Sorry you see things that way. No, savvy world leaders know that we are all equal players in the global community, and one country should not intimidate others.  Even Reagan and Bush Sr. were far more diplomatic and restrained than Bush Jr. was during his term in office.

I agree that Bush Jr. did a lot to tarnish our international image.  And I agree that it definitely needed some repairing; I just think there is a right way to go about it and a wrong way.  And I don't think Obama's way is completely right.  You can be strong on national defense, security, and stand up for democracy without alienating half the world.

no problem...I was thinking about writing a hub about the benefits of political discussion on hubpages' forums - are there any? LOL

My conclusion would be: no, not a whole lot! wink

For me, I enjoy developing my debate skills. Other than that, I know that my presenting of a few facts here and there isn't going to change many opinions. I don't expect it too. I hope other people don't expect to change my opinion, either. Like I said, we all have been made aware of different information and all have different experiences. Thank goodness, because life would be pretty darn boring if this was not the case.

However, I fear that many on here just like to argue and lose sight of the true purpose of political discussion, which I would have to define as the method in which issues are debated and discussed to weigh the pros and cons in order to reach or strengthen a conclusion. So many people resort to including belittling statements and righteous attitudes with little bits of interesting information and facts sprinkled in. Who is going to respond well to that? It's not something I like to participate in.

I like discussion based on facts. Not blog posts that can be traced back to K Street on Washington D.C. or what someone heard from and friend of a friend of a friend. Sadly, there is a lot of that on here.

If the political discussions on HubPages involved more factual information and no personal attacks (*completely* pointless!), I'd definitely want to participate more. smile

smile Yes, Virginia(s).  There is intelligent life out there.  Once in a while...oh, pre-two or so months ago...there were some pretty good debates going on hubpage political forums (and sometimes still are).  And yes, a lively debate and and exchange of ideas...even barbs...can hone your mental skills.  I also believe that one can and do influence and change others' perceptions, sometimes widening them & sometimes for the better.

I think when people assume "opinions are just opinions," etc. they perhaps think of this as a zero sum game.  And many of the new participants, keen on being as disagreeable as humanly possible I take it, obviously think that. But it isn't always so.

These stereotypical loud mouth types biggest sin is being boring, though!

If I were having common sense lately I would rarely participate in the political discussions.  However, you could always write a blog elsewhere besides Hubpages and perhaps make it unidentifying enough to where no one could know who you were.  However, I understand your being hesitant to do so to because it seems many people will flame those discussion.

  27. SweetiePie profile image82

I just want to add a few things here.  First off I know many introverts who do not enjoy debates of any kind, but they are some of the most astute people I know.  They listen and read, but rarely contribute to debates because they simply do not enjoy these exchanges.  Online I am a some what more outspoken of my thoughts and feelings, but in a group I would draw back a little.  Nothing wrong with deciding not to participate in these exchanges, and I think sometimes it can be more peaceful that way.

As for insisting that the economy of Texas is thriving in this current down turn, well that is not 100% accurate.  California has the largest and most complex economy here in the US, and the largest population in the country.  California also has the eighth largest economy in the world, which is a large reason as to why we have taken such a hit.

It is very limiting to generalize and not point out the specifics.  The entire world economy is not in good shape right now, just to let those know who feel their state is doing really well.  Maybe the unemployment rate there is lower than other states, but seven percent is still high, and more jobs will be lost this year.

The Texas unemployment rate is rising along with that of the country, so to proclaim that one's state is in better shape is ridiculous:

    http://economywatchblog.dallasnews.com/ … a-gre.html

A couple of people on this thread follow people around and make personal comments.  If I stood up for my education it was because from the first exchanges I was being spoken down to, and I do not have to accept that treatment.  So you can wrap up your perspective in a pretty little bow and say you are showing me the facts, but that is simply not the case.

TK you were very protective of Sarah Palin over the David Letterman debacle.  Also, you were a little upset when people simply said the minister she invited to town was a little odd.  So it is one thing to claim you not phased by little thing, but that is not completely the case.

Also, no one is going to conform to your way of thinking.  I feel very fair and kind, and I do not have to rise to anything.  Nothing I have said is out of line.

Protective? No, that would suggest some personal connection that does not exist.

That is hardly what some people said, but that is neither here nor there.

      As I was saying...

BELIEVE IT OR NOT...your tactics are obvious to many here, TK.

And as I recall, we said concerning that minister that praying over the condemning people as witches and running them out of villages is, to put it mildly, a 'bit odd.'

I think you really need to pick up with your reading for context and vocabulary skills.  (And that's not a lie...just a helpful suggestion.)

See, THAT is what you would call a 'personal attack.' A pretty weak one, but nonetheless...

A comment you deserve.  And true, as well.  There are those here who you ARE attacking who would not say anything.  And just because your tactics are a little below what a casual observer may ascertain as abusive does not mean that some of us who have witnessed your procedure on the forums now for months don't see it.

so when we dont agree with you we are attacking, but when you all dont agree with us and make slight personal attacks you consider those to be nothing out of line? talk about hipocracy...

How about discussing the topic of the thread? How would that be?

Only when that is convenient for you, I take it?

Why ANYONE even attempts to talk to you anymore on any issue is beyond me.  Sweetiepie has been kind enough to do so...one of few.  You ought to thank her instead of attack her.

You are quite the piece of work, I must say.

Only when it is convenient for you.  As witnessed on numerous threads.  They've even measured how many posts you make daily of your nonsense.  It along the lines of 27 per day, to most people's average of 10.

I'm done with you today.  Too much excitement for me, yawn.
