Just another rant...
While I respect the value of content of the hubsters, writers, and creative minds posting here on hubpages. I too, have a few products i promote or drop a link to from time to time.
Ironically, with one page I had a short bullet list (5 total)of quality products centered arund writing, blogging, twitter, etc... whereby they offer ebooks or what not informing people how to make a buck at applying these priciples to assist people in making a dollar.
I reduced the list to 2 simple text ads, and it still will not let me post! Arrrggghhhh!
Claiming it's overly promoting another site? What the heck, they have 2 ads per page, shouldn't I be able to post 2?
The part that erks me is i write poetry, and other forms of prose and non-fiction, so I'm not just here pushing spam or for the wrong reasons. This particular hub only contains roughly 400-500 words as it's a poem, but is that really the problem?
Personally, it's the insult. Everywhere we socialist web-surfers congregate, the majority of the content pertaining to advertising is controlled, owned, or affiliated to Tom or similar genius minds that'll gather 10' of millions, for a free site...then blast every page with ads irrelevant most the time to our actual content, which translates to Millions of dollars for the hosting site, which is educational, insightful, and well... ingenius on their part!
Gotta respect that!
But, let the little fish catch a nibble to no?
If I had it my way.... which is a Big "If"... I'll learn how to build the volumns of traffic hubpages, twitter, and places like hi5, and Myspace generate...Lord knows they're kickin back livin good.
Well, WOW, do you feel better now after your rant lol. I have no idea how to help , sorry.
Oh my!! I am glad you feel better you took all of my words and allowed me to decompress..***sigh** I feel so much better.
Just a thought, but we see so many promotional things that many of us just do not take these seriously. Try writing a few informational hubs without any promotion and people will be much more likely to look at your profile, where you can promote yourself.
Well being new to sharing my writing on sites where there can actually be some decent feed back, I can say from what I've seen this is definitely the place.
As far as promoting myself (just the sound of that scares me a bit) I know where you're coming from though, and I don't intend to over promote either a product or myself. I'm sure some might say you can never over-promote yourself, but I'd simply like to find a middle ground, and establish more balance between the writing passion, and the pressure money tends to create.
Certainly between the two, I believe my passion for writing by far outweighs any amount of money, definitely. The hard part, is being patient to see what others critique as good? or bad?
Clearly, I never really know!
Your links were unrelated to your content. This is frowned upon by Google, and against our rules (which are mostly designed to help you rank better and keep you from getting banned from AdSense).
I'm not sure I follow you, as I'm all for the mighty 'G' and use all their tools (except adsense) the ads I had were affiliate links I control, and promote. Sadly, if placing 2 links will hurt my hub score that bad I'll have to see what others are doing to keep within your rules respectively, and still offer up an item now and again.
(Shhh don't tell anyone, I started in affiliate marketing 6 weeks ago, haven't spent a dime, and made $1 whole dollar so far! LOL)
~I'm not here for money, just learning, writing and having fun:)
WayOut, I don't know which Hub this refers to, but I THINK I understand what Maddie is saying. Let me try it in different words and see if it makes any more sense to you.
You mentioned that the links were affiliate links, and that's cool. But Maddie mentioned that the links did not relate to your CONTENT.
Okay, I have a Hub about building a Survival Cabin. I do have outbound links there, though not affiliate. But let's say I tried linking to, oh, a site that sold nuclear submarines. I would rather expect HP (HubPages) to notice that, and I do know that Google wouldn't be able to see it as being relevant.
Now, let's say I REALLY wanted to link to that nuclear submarine site because, well, selling just one nuclear submarine could keep me rolling in affiliate income for LIFE. OK. About that time, perhaps I could suddenly "remember" that I got the entire idea for the Survival Cabin from a tour I took on a nuclear submarine when I was in the Navy. So I write a couple of solid paragraphs of content talking about how ALIKE the cramped quarters in the sub and the limited square footage in the cabin happen to be, and now I have CONTENT that is RELEVANT to nuclear submarines, and I link out, and everybody's happy.
Not that I've been in the Navy OR a sub, but you get the idea.
Does this help any?
That was a very well written and detailed explanation. An odd correlation for sure, but a good explanation nevertheless. Nice job.
Ghost, you're right on. Thanks for explaining that so well.

"John Mueller said that external links, links on your web site that point to outside web sites (or outbound links) are not a ranking signal. Just to be clear, links are a ranking factor - but you linking out to other sites doesn't help you rank better. He said the content you use for the link...

I find it hilarious that Hubpages pushes the concept of helping new Hubbers yet my Hub which has had very good reception by the community has been flagged for being both overly promotional and substandard.I had 5 social bookmarking links, and 2 other links to free tools absolutely related to the...

So, I've had a hub unpublished due to HP claiming that it's overly promotional. The hub only has 2 outbound links ( which is the number of links we're allowed to put for the other external sites ) this is the only thing that I'm having in my hub. There is also NO amazon products or Ebay or...

It seems strange the rule for affiliate links is the same for every hub. For example, I have a hub with over 2,200 words, plenty of links to other hubs, and after getting a warning going over it numerous times, I finally gave up, stopped wasting my time and deleted the single affiliate link I could...

i am wondering today that some 3-4 of my hubs has been flagged as overly promotional just a few hours ago..i made some changes and submitted for review ..but i do want to know when the overly promotional flag really applies to a hub..i mean each of these flagged 3 hubs have exactly 2-3 links only...
