Achieving your life goals .. ?

   What are your life goals? and if you achieved all of your life’s goals what do you think you would you feel?

      i wanted to earn my own money, not to depend on my hubby but there are a lot  things that I can't do. I wish to be a baker, work in foreign country, lead my own life

   For most of my life I had no life goals, other than to regard life as an adventure and be open to opportunities that arise.
   
   There was a period in my forties when I "got serious" about my career and got very into setting goals.  Looking back I think that turned out to be a real negative because it meant I was so focussed on goals that I forgot to enjoy the present. 
   
   I was reminded of this recently when I was talking to a girl who has always dreamed of going to Australia (t's very difficult to migrate to Oz, you must have a skill that's on the official list of shortages, and you must have both a qualification and experience in that skill). So a few years ago she started training in a skill that was on the list - but this year it's been removed from the list so her study has been wasted.  She has now switched to nursing, which is likely to be on the list for the long term, but she'll have to study for five years then get some work experience. 
   
   Overall it means she'll have spent ten years working towards moving to Australia.  She started this in her mid-twenties and my fear is that she's so focussed, she's forgetting to enjoy what could be the best years of her life, neglecting relationships and friendships, all to migrate to another country which is not likely to live up to her golden expectations.

      I'm lucky because I grew up in Australia for most of my life and I can honestly say that for me it is one of the best places to live -  from a lifestyle and diversity POV. So I can see why a person would want to move here.
      
      However growing up here and immigrating here are 2 completely different experiences. I have seen plenty of foreign students and professionals come here and struggle and become frustrated at the fact that the opportunities and dreams they have built up in their minds are not the same in reality.  Even my parents faced similar troubles which they overcame with time and patience.
      
      I can only say persistence pays off - if it is her dream I think it is better to peruse it and fail and try again .. then to live with regrets and "what ifs".
      
      Working towards a goal doesn't necessarily mean you are missing out on life, it might just mean you have a better personal definition of it.

   I was gonna be an internationally respected, highly paid rock n' roll journalist, married to Carmen Electra.
   
   Instead I'm middle aged, out of shape and trapped in the New Jersey suburbs, and my "journalism" career consists of...my HubPages. Which no one reads.
   
   Damn.
   
   ....where did I go wrong??

   My life goal is the same as several billion other people's, to continue to survive and maybe even have a little fun along the way.
   
   Edit. Plus the contributing-to-society thing, which I'm still managing to do.

   Some people think achieving a life goal would be the greatest feeling in the world, until they do it... Trust me I achieved a life goal very early and when you do you feel great, but when that feeling wears off there is nothing but emptiness as you sit and think, "what now?". Where do you go after achieving a life goal? It was then I realized that it wasn't the end result that mattered, it was who I became and from that I am now able to set higher goals and I won't stop until I've done everything .

   I'm happy with what I accomplished in my library career and am now retired. I have a goal to write several family books to preserve family history. I hope I live to 105 so I can  do all the things I want to do.
