The Woefully Indigent in America

   There are simply those who refuse to better themselves educationally and/or socioeconomically.  They bemoan their dire socioeconomic circumstances, cursing those who are more successful educationally and socioeconomically than they are.  They rationalize such as they were somehow unlucky, even cursed while those who are more successful were lucky, even blessed.  They fail to acknowledge that those who were more successful made better life choice decisions, studied, planned, and organized.  Those who are more successful are more proactive while they adopted a more passive mindset, consciousness, and psychology, expecting others to feel sorry for them and even rescue them from their dire, hellish socioeconomic conditions.  Thoughts?

   There will always be people on every level of society. I had someone turn up her nose and comment everyone could get a PHD so she had no reason to feel sorry for those who were less fortunate. Unfortunately, if we all had PHD's we would still have people on every level. It would simply mean those serving the fries had bigger student loans than they currently have and be even more miserable.

      That woman whom you spoke of is correct.  There is opportunity but there are people too lazy to take advantage of such opportunities.  They have the owe me and rescue me mentality.  They want the more affluent segment, whether it is family members or the government to give them a more affluent life without ANY effort on their part.  They have a poverty mindset, culture, consciousness, and psychology.  It is time for the madness to stop.  If people and the government desisted in helping them, they would HAVE to work now, hmmm.....

         I'm afraid that attitude has always been presented to me from hard right wing Republicans. I find it too harsh to allow for compassion in dealing with people who have found themselves down on their luck and, although some will always abuse the system I'd rather work within a system which may be abused by the least fortunate among us as opposed to creating a system which would ultimately be abused by the most fortunate (financially).
         
         I notice you have also commented that people shouldn't have kids until they are financially, emotionally, and psychologically prepared to do so.  That would be a death knell for humanity. We've got kids who turned out alright. I didn't fit one of those (OK, honestly, two). You do the best you can. 
         
         By your standards, the middle class today would cease to have children. Few are financially secure and comfortable with that fact until they've hit their thirties or forties. Even then, if we all looked at what they estimate the cost of raising a child to be and wanted to ensure we had that we'd have to skip procreation. Plus, those who by all accounts fit your definition turn out some less than stellar examples of humanity. What do you suggest we do about that?

            While Grace and I have discussed this issue and she knows that I do not abide with the "aggressively lazy" types. I take your position more so, it is not always of the society of "hard work reaps its own reward" that the conservatives always tell us. I would rather see a few pennies slip out from my fingers then have fat cats rape the treasury for millions not out of need but for the sheer fact that they can.

   What is the antidote, gmwilliams?
   I think it is involvement in sports while young.
   I think we need girls and boys PE to be separated again.
   And all kids should learn to swim...
   and swim fast.

      Children need to be educated so they can be self-sufficient as adults.  They must be strongly inculcated to make constructive life choices regarding sex, education, and other important matters.  Parents themselves must also exercise the F.E.P. plan before they even think about having children.  The F.E.P. plan is that parents should not have children unless they are financially, emotionally, and psychologically prepared to do so.   So many people make  very uneducated, even destructive choices which imperils their lives, causing dependency because they are in a dead end situation.  People must THINK and PLAN before they ACT as there are consequences to every action!

         That would be correct in an ideal world. I am sure that most parents have this ambition for their children to be self-sufficient. But often times, the ideal and reality are far apart. We live in a society that constantly bombard us with messages  consciously and subconsciously, try shoveling dead fleas into a barn, there is a lot that happens between here and there. Children by their nature are wayward and independent and parents have less influence today than in any time in the past.
