I just logged into an old account which I started in 2010. The account has NO hubs so all the Hubpages ad program earnings are entirely from referrals. I just made payout.

For an idea of what this means, here are the stats:

    5 trackers
    335    Signups
    270    Hubs
    187,013 Traffic to hubs

Thought it may be of interest for those who wonder if there's money in referrals or how many referrals you need to see anything decent (hint: a LOT).

(Note: Payout amount of $50 is from HP ads only. This does not include Adsense or Amazon, which I haven't bothered to track.)

That is interesting as I thought the referral program was no longer in effect.

As far as I know, referral trackers still work but ONLY if they're on other sites (they don't work internally anymore).

I could never figure out quite how to do them and stopped thinking about them when I believe Hubpages said they was no longer part of the program.  I never could figure out exactly how they worked, more so now when you say you have no content on that account for people to read?

Traffic referrals have been discontinued, but you can still refer authors and earn from it. If someone signs up under your tracker and writes Hubs, you get 10% of their earnings permanently (and they get the usual 60% while HubPages gets 30%). But yes, you must refer people from off of HubPages (by emailing the link, posting to social media, etc). Referral trackers placed in Hubs will not work.

Thanks Christy, I thought it had been discontinued and that there are other ways to use them.

I've always wondered if anyone made money on referrals, because I haven't made much. I think I've had a couple signups, no Hubs. A little bit of traffic has come in for the tracking code on other Hubs I've shared. Still, nowhere near a payout on that.

Actually, I just checked; no traffic to Hubs with the referral code. So, actually, I've made nothing on it. Not that I'm that worried, I hadn't given it much thought. But interesting that it's possible to make money from them.

You have to be really lucky to have people who sign up and actually write hubs and make money under your signup.  I have lots of people signup, but so far, only a few people wrote anything, and what they wrote was unpublished shortly thereafter!

The one time I actually signed someone up she became such a pain in the butt that I swore I would never sign anybody up again.  Wanted me to teach her everything, including how to write!  Not worth it!
