As someone who has only been here a few years, I'm curious, is it normal for HubPages to implement so many big changes in so short a time? Since I've been here, we've had niche sites, a "My Account" redesign, removal of the half-width capsules, upcoming removal or revamp of profile backgrounds, removal of Ebay capsules, and more I'm surely forgetting.
The niche sites are great, but I hope HP doesn't end up removing many features we enjoy because inexperienced authors misuse them.
Once upon a time there were lots of places for a writer to make cash. Over time changes to the internet and technology wiped many of them out. Hubpages acquired a similar company called Squidoo.
Hubpages is nearly a one of a kind. The changes that are made are to make sure that Hubpages is a success. Google uses machine learning, a complex algorithm and an AI. To keep up with the speed of technology Hubpages makes changes.
There will be times we lose features we enjoy, but those are the sacrifices we make so that the engineers can focus on what is really important. Think of the change as evolution. Hubpages has not let us down yet, and I believe will keep up with the speed of technology.
You have to remember that it is not the writers who own this site or who are the decision makers here. We pay nothing for all of the benefits we have save for a percentage of the money we earn, which is only fair. Businesses have to earn in order to keep functioning!
As far as I'm concerned, even though I may disagree with certain decisions, it appears that everything they've done has improved the site as well as my earnings. This year I am already earning more than 30% more than last year, and last year I more than doubled my earnings from the year before.
So, to me, the team must be doing something right! At some point you need to learn to trust their judgment, regardless of how many changes they make.
HP has changed a lot over the years, you are quite right, but in my experience most of the changes have been positive ones, ultimately resulting in better quality articles. That's the key. Some may complain but often after a few teething problems, the ship steadies again.The niche sites for me have taken HP to a different level and whilst there's always unpredictable things happening online, at the moment there's a buzz about the place.
The short answer is "Yes!" HP has been known to make back-to-back changes that many of us found frustrating over the years. But in the end, with much sacrifice, contention, and adjustment to change, it seems to work out for the best. Hang in there.
Haha, I hope my initial post didn't come across as ungrateful. I'm very pleased with the freedom of HubPages as a whole, and I'm sure there are angles to every change that we writers don't see.
One heck of an intelligent thread! Yep, change is constant. Frankly, it is amazing HP is still around. Money every month.
So far I loike all the changes. I have barly been here 11 months and it seems like there has been quite a few changes. I like having different backgrounds though.
The internet is constantly changing. In particular, Google is constantly changing its demands, and since HubPages relies on Google for its traffic, that means HubPages must constantly make changes, too.
Unfortunately, Google is secretive and doesn't tell website owners exactly what it wants, so HubPages (and everyone else) has to rely on best guesses. So it's a case of making changes, testing to see if they helped - if it they don't, try something else.
While some changes are obvious, I do sometimes find HubPages' decisions a little mystifying. For instance, in 2011, our most successful Hubbers were calling for HubPages to introduce niche sites, but it took HubPages several years to come around to the idea. I still disagree with some of the decisions HubPages makes, but it's their site so it's their privilege.
I have yet to truly understand most of the changes, but I will tell you that in my 2 months writing for hubpages.com I haven't exactly noticed any changes. Perhaps I'm too passive. Cheers.
