The biggest thing that gives me hope in this world no matter what, is my precious daughter. She is the light of my life and I know that no matter what happens, that we always have each other. She can take my worst day and just make it all vanish. I am so blessed to be able to watch her grow up.

Knowing that things change.  I know change for most people is a scarey proposition and not something they look forward to, but it is something I can count on.  You can be certain change will happen.  So knowing that change is coming, that things will not remain the same, that good or bad, life is not stagnant, that things can get worse, but they also have a 50% chance of being better, gives me hope.  Yes, I hate where I am now or what is happening now, but tomorrow, next week, or next month it can all be very different.  Change is not something to fear, it is something to embrace.  How dull would our lives be if nothing ever changed?  Change, its a good thing.

Nothing in particular gives me hope.  I think it's more that I'm pretty skilled at manufacturing my own.  I'll "scan" the situation, look for the things that could remotely be signs of reasons to have hope, and I'll "collect" all those things, put them in a "mental basket", and somehow find I have some hope.

Maybe, too, though, I don't spend a lot of time thinking about whether I have hope or not.  Instead, I'm a "do-er".  I think of anything I possibly can do to increase my changes of having hope, do those things, and then look for some more.  We don't feel hopeless when we're doing something we think may improve the situation, and we're usually to busy to ponder whether or not we have hope.

Aside from the occasional manufacturing of our own hope, I think it's most effective to do whatever we can to increase the chances of a positive future.  If we can't do anything about the situation I guess I think that's when we should manufacture a little hope and be ready for disappointment if/when that comes.  We can usually deal with that too.

Usually, when it seems like things are really going downhill, I find that one door closes and another one opens (in the words of my mother).  In the face of all of the turmoil in the world today, I find that focusing on the things I am thankful for helps me stay happy.  My Al-Anon sponsor calls this the "gratitude list."  She also reminds me to "Stay in today," and decide if the thing I am worrying about is something that I have control over.  If it isn't, then I am not in today.  Having hope is a state of mind, and if you can find faith and believe that good things will happen for you, no matter where you may be in life right now, then you have hope.  Everyone has hope, they just don't realize how to get to that state of mind.  The two things that have brought me hope in the future are having children and having a relationship with the Lord.

Knowing that God, my Heavenly Father will always be on the throne and He watches over me.

Knowing that I can trust in my Heavenly Father...that He is in control of all things at all times. Knowing that when I leave this world I will be in His presence forever more.
