Being close to God is a very interesting proposition. Cynics may believe you cannot form a close relationship with an invisible spirit creature, but just the opposite is true.

God reveals himself to be a caring Father to his human creation. Just like any loving father, God wants to have a close relationship with us as individuals.  He repeatedly guides us toward him by means of his inspired word, The Bible. (2 Timothy 3:16,17)

For example, a quote from James 4:8 reads in part, "Draw close to God and he will draw close to you."  So we can be close to God by drawing to him.

To draw close to HIM, Jesus taught that we need to pray to God, and to live not by bread alone, but by every utterance coming forth through his mouth. (Matthew 4:4) God's utterances are in the Bible.

So along with PRAYING TO GOD, we must READ AND MEDITATE on what the Bible says, which should make us ready to OBEY his teachings and listen to him.

Once we reach out to God in these acceptable ways, God will draw close to us in return. Knowledge about him is just the start and the knowledge has to come from his recognized source of communication with humankind - The Bible. These are the primary reasons I feel close to God.

Very....He is the Almighty....He is the Creator of all.....He gave me Life...He is the Air I breathe....He gave His only Begotten Son, to die on the Cross for our Sins....And by His Son's Grace, we are Saved......He is the Living Word.....What greater things then these?  And to Him, the Father of All....Happy Father's Day....

Do I Give To Charity?  Sometimes....Do I help others?  Sometimes....And yet, doing this does not draw you any closer to God, then His love for you....

Do I sin?  We all sin, and fall short of God's glory....

Do I Pray...Yes....And sometimes, He'll answer my Prayers before I've even finished.....God Bless!

How close?  Not as much as God wants me to be.

    Praying? Not sinning? Donating?

These are all important, but one shouldn't try and break down into individual pieces one's relationship to God.  Your spiritual side should balance with everything else that makes you, "you".

This is also a warning not to fall into fundamentalism and judgment of others.

To love anyone - and this is the road to get close to them - you have to get to know them.  Your question is very well phrased "How are you close.."  God loves each and everyone of us, individually and perfectly; God knows us individually and perfectly.  We are the beneficiaries of God's love without our doing anything to deserve this love.  But we are free to accept, or not, this love.

By praying and learning to listening. God is always talking to us - we just don't know how to listen.  And from there the charity, the not sinning, the praying, will be a conscious decision we take, because when you love, you want to please and be as generous as we are capable of.

And then these acts of love, from us to God, will become second nature.

God, through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, should be the first and foremost focus of one's life. No one or anything should come before Him. We are told through God's Word to pray incessantly (without ceasing). For me that means starting everyday in prayer, praising Him, asking forgivenss (when needed), praying on behalf of others, asking for guidance and planning my day according to Him...not me. Through the day, acknowledging His presence in my life and seeking His will in all decision making. At the end of the day, giving Him thanks and all glory and praise. He is there at all times. One only needs to stop what they're doing to speak with Him. Through reading God's Word, we are able to receive His guidance in all areas of our lives and also learn of His attributes.

Not only the beautiful side that you must do in how to be close to God remember the trials and the hardships that we encounter in this earth he wants us to trust him even we did not see him but you must remember that God is always in our side even we are not close to him. He is close to us and he never abandon us even he sacrifice his life by death on the cross in order to forgive all our sins. It is time for us now to meditate, reflect and correct ourselves from the sins that we committed. It is time for us to unite ourselves to him. Take note we did not know when is our last breath on earth may be it is too late for us if we make ourselves to forgive those who sinned against us before ourselves left this world.

How are you close to God he asks?

    This should help him:

John 14:20 (KJV) At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

If you are Born Again HE IS IN YOU 24/7 - period , so how close do you want to be!!?? If you think YOU can get closer through anything YOU are doing then YOU are deluded.

    Here is more proof:

John 14:18 (KJV) I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

He comes to us, we do not go to Him!!

There is actually some clown mainstream Christian here on HubPages who has written a Hub entitled "Get me to Jesus". I'll tell you straight folks he ain't getting nowhere apart from hearing these words from The Lord in the resurrection: "Go away from me for I never knew you"

    Cant get closer than this

De:30:14: But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.
Ex:4:12: Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.

It is recommended that the way to get and stay close to God is to say the Rosary daily. Say it for world peace, for a prayer request, or for no reason other than to glorify God and show love for Him. Say it to ponder God's love for us, the mercy of forgiveness, the sacrifice Jesus made, the sacrifice Mary made sitting by and letting all of these things happen and being an obedient servant and supporting her son, all of it - and focusing on the mercy and love shown to mankind. In doing this, Mary has promised when she gave the Rosary to makind that it would bring peace and love to the world, and bring us all closer to God. I believe that. And don't forget the new Luminous Mysteries! http://www.medjugorje.org/rosary.htm

God has blessed me with talents and graces as every person has. He has given me the grace to be creative. I also love to pray contemplatively as deeply as the Lord allows. The Rosary or the Chaplet of Divine Mercy every day. I immerse myself completely surrendering to His Divine plan He has for me at that moment and meditate on the mysteries and words....one word at a time. This requires acknowledging the essence of time and consumes my heart in His Love, Mercy, Goodness, and Beauty as well as Our Blessed Mother.

Jesus was the only religious leader and Savior who gave two simple commandments if we have to be close to God.
    1. Love God with all your being.
    2. Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
He said that this is the law and the commandments. If you keep these two commandments you will have kept all the commandments and the law.
