   There should be a course on ethics and morality,but not religion
   
   Although,I would want to see what the course material encompasses.I would think the material would be non discriminatory in nature.In other words not just politically correct but morally correct.

   I'm with HubMerc.  How could we possibly agree on what "religion" is correct, what theory is correct, what is truth?  We can't agree in a smallish community like HubPages and we certainly don't agree in the melting pot of the world, the USofA.  On the other hand, morals, respect and consideration for others IS a subject we should be talking about in EVERY class. Unfortunately we have reduced ourselves to just talking about "rules".

   Absolutely not.  The world is bad off enough with out contaminating the young minds of future leaders with false teachings.  However, spirituality and the divinity of each individual must be brought forward into the collective mind of all mankind.

    I don't know about compulsory, but It certainly has a place. Christianity is part of our cultue and history and one cannot understand things such as American literature without some knowledge of the Bible. Most of the classicAmerican writers were familiar with the King James version of the Bible and it is referred to directly and indirectly.
    
    I do not thibnk religion should be taught in public schools in a doctrinal way, but as a historical and cultural influence.

    The issue is how you define religion..Religion can be a a pluralistic view on life that everyone is right or everyone is wrong..The real question is whether there are absolutes to govern a civilized society..To say there are no absolutes..is a religion in itself..Secularism..So to say thast one who promotes doctrines of absolute values has no voice in education..is discrimination..Let the pluralist and those who hold to absolutes both have their say in our schools..and let's see which theory creates a better society..Secularist should not be affraid to open of the discussion..if their position has merit..Whose absolute..the Bible is a good starting point..I think it will hold up to any debate on the issue..D burlison, Jd

    Not religion, but a quiet time to reflect. It is the parents job to teach the kids about what they believe in and whom they believe in and or have faith in.

    I do not think that religion should be made compulsary in schools for many of the reasons listed in the other answers to this question. For starters, which religion? I know the US is a majority christian country but Catholic or Protestant? Which version of Protestant? If you live in an urban area you will encounter a wide variety of religious expression so how do you decide on a curriculum? Maybe a general history of religion course to expose people to a variety of religious traditions?
    
    Secondly, if someone is concerned with the lack of religion in the school system they can usually opt out and go to a private religiously affiliated school (such as a Catholic school) or home school their children.
    
    I am an active participant in my church and I take the time to teach my children what I want them to know. I do not need or want the school system to do this for me.
