I had an out-of-body experience when I was 13. A devastating incident happened to me, causing me to leave my body and watch another person smack me a few times across the face. I just remember not feeling anything, so it protected me from the physical pain of my situation. I'm not sure that you want to have one if it requires a traumatic experience.

When I was a young teenager, I became fascinated with the idea that I could achieve an out of body experience, or some sort of astral projection. I read books, I meditated for hours on end, I jumped off of rather high ledges... and I never experienced what I was looking for.
So, as far as my personal experience has taught me, if there is a safe way to detach the consciousness from the body, I don't know it.
Ah, but in the trying of it, I did find other things of value: The clarity to be found in meditation; the vast teachings of different spiritual and religions sects; and the fascinating study of alternate states of consciousness. I'd suggest you just get out there and explore, read, listen and learn. Like the Buddha said, the way cannot be told - only shown. That beats the hell out of falling from high places.

I would suggest getting Journeys Out of the Body by Robert Monroe Hemi Sync. Ebay is a good place to look. You can also google it,  Or maybe someone in your town is having a get together once a week.  I use this program and really like it. Good Luck!

The process?? I'm pretty sure there's no process to having one. It just happens

Ive read the best way to induce an OBE is to try it while your awakening from sleep, so your half way awake and your half asleep, during that period is the highest peak to inducing your own OBE, good luck.

I have tried this and from my experience I would recommend caution. I felt like I was an electrical appliance slowly pulling myself out of a wall socket- or at least this is the best way I am able to think about how it felt at the time.

I fell over a fence trying to get into my house because I locked myself out of the front door, and experienced bright lights, a loss of gravitational awareness (or a zero gravity field) and witnessed three foggy characters that appeared to have bright auras surrounding them. They told me to come with them, but I thought I was dreaming and strangely replied along the lines of "I choose to stay here a little bit longer."

Regarding astral projection: I have also had experiences of which I have left my body during periods of meditating while drifting to sleep and gone for very long walks, spoken to other "travellers," and much more. I recommend meditation and reflecting on what defines a clear mind with clear logical thinking prior to attempting to project. If you decide to live a lifestyle like this it is also important to stay away from people who seem intentionally negative, and to elaborate on this: it is okay to attempt to open yourself to a friendship with someone you feel needs to find solace and help, however, stay safely away from people who intentionally hurt other people, because from my experience their disharmony has the capacity discharge itself into your aura. Thus, such disharmony has the potential to cause somewhat frightening effects on any astral projection that you, and/or friends, may attempt.

The last astral projection took place when I was about seven years old, and was somewhat nondescribable, as in: even if I were able to describe it I cannot nor will I describe it in any detail beyond telling you that if you are going to attempt an out of body experience or astral travel you need to be very careful and remember to maintain decent physical and emotional health.

Other tips for those experiencing Astral Projections include:

    Clean your home first.

Let the sunlight fill your home.

Stay away from electronics even when they seem like they are off.

Attempt during daylight because the sun tends to provide a feeling of safety and comfort, etcetera.

Contemplate your actions prior to acting.

    Meditate.

Try not to talk to strangers, and if they talk to you do not divulge more than they need to know; talk about what is simple and easy.

Do not play ghost. Do not attempt to stand in the way of moving traffic. (you could be in someone else's body and killing them)

Do not play ghost. Do not try to "possess" someone, regardless of their state of consciousness.

Do not jump off of high places expecting to take flight. If you were able to take flight you would have done so while on the ground.

    Stay away from harmful media.

    Form a covenant.

I learned these the hard way.
