SherriSapp's answer defines the American ignorance towards foreign affairs!! Somebody needs to go back to school ...
This issue has nothing to do with what America wants to do with its own freedom and liberty. The issue America is disliked is because of what it does in the world. The examples are almost endless: it invades countries (1954  - Guatemala, 1950 - Vietnam, 1899 - Philippines, 2003 - Iraq ... I just picked a few examples from different years but there are countless more).
Take the case of Nigaragua for example. The International Court of Justice  "found in its verdict that the US was "in breach of its obligations under customary international law not to use force against another State", "not to intervene in its affairs", "not to violate its sovereignty", "not to interrupt peaceful maritime commerce", and "in breach of its obligations under Article XIX of the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation between the Parties signed at Managua on 21 January 1956."
Back to the jihadi movement ... the United States supports crooked governments such as that of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and/or Iraq (early 1980s). Some muslim people do not want the American export of capitalism, of Holywood and of the rest of the garbage that America exports under the label of freedom.
I have said this many times: the United States has military bases in over 60 countries ... it is an empire and it's 'subjects' do not want it anymore. They want freedom from Macdonalds and Wallmart, they do not want American corporations sucking-dry their resources and so on ... I can go on forever but I hope you get my point: it is not what America wants to do at home, it's about what America does abroad!
The answer to peace is for America to give-up on its export of capitalism and to leave/destroy its military bases outside of the United States. Also not supporting fanatic dictators would help ...

I don't think the issue is why does Osama Bin Laden hate the US so much. The issue is: why do enough people agree with him to make him able to carry out his threats.

The answer has a lot to do with Israel. The US has been supporting Israel for years: looking the other way at it's many violations of UN treaties, violations of human rights, suppression of the people in the area etc.

The treatment of the people who lived in the area before it became Israel especially has been scandalous. I mean: they lost their land, their rights to drinking water and are now in a position that they can't travel freely.

All this enrages the neighboring states. That the US supports Israel in all this enrages these neighboring states almost as much as Israels behavior itself does.

As others have already said: Osama Bin Laden also feeds off cultural fears of capitalism, sexual licence etc. But I do think the main thing is the perceived partiality of the US against the Muslim states and Pro-Israel.

The reason is that Osama bin Laden is a Muslim.  One of the basic tenets of Islam is that good Muslims must convert or slay all infidels.  Infidels are non-believers in Islam or incorrect practitioners of it  That includes Christians and Jews.  That is why the Sunnis and Shias are always killing each other.  That is the basic politically incorrect fact the kumbaya wusses try to soft-coat, but of which you must be aware.

If everyone in the U.S. and Israel converted, and submitted to whatever bin Laden's version of wacko Islamic Sharia law is, everything would be hunky-dory.

The USA is the biggest power in the world. It would be absurd to expect that such a powerful country would stay iddle in international politics. The interventions and invasions are the way in which American governments have imposed their will out of their own interest. None of these invasions has been agreed upon by the American people. For each invasion, there have been a gruop of Americans that support it and a group that is against it. Normally, large corporations are behind the support for these invasions. These corporations aren't even American. They are multinational entities that at points control the American and other governments. For instance, who benefited from the war in Iraq?
    Halliburton!!!!
No, the USA did not benefit from it. President Bush and Cheney did, because they were stock holders. The war was a way to give Halliburton an exclusive contract for the oil in Iraq. Yet, the fact is that Halliburton is not even an American corporation. It is a Unated Emirates corporation.
Of course, in one hundred years, the Iraquis will continue remembering the USA as the invaders. But nobody will remember Halliburton. Every invasion had a force playing puppets with the American leaders. But we are remembered as the invaders. That is why so many people around the world hate us. Rather than resenting this, we can do our best to counteract the evil some of our fellow Americans spread. In fact, MANY Americans are in many places in the world performing great deeds at all points of time.
We are a big nation with many people that have resources to do good and bad things. We end up doing good and evil, but the good and the evil are done by different people. Most evil is performed by the same group, under the same ideology and most good is done by the same other group, under a consistent ideology too. The main issue is what do each of us consider good and what each of us consider evil. In fact, I was called a traitor and considered evil every time I opposed a war!

Osama is a psychique patient. He does't have the normal wisdom which one should have to live among human beings. He has no vision, plans and programme for the upgradation of humanity. All his attempts are to degrade the humanity and the maximum sufferers are his own rligious followers. The senseless killings of innocent human beings in the most barberous way to achieve some fanatic goals are condemmable with the highest hatred. He should have adopted the novel method of developing his own downtrodden pople who are unnecessrarly subjected to harrassment in the name of religion. He should have taken stern displinary action towards the fake scholars of his religion who interpret the Holy Quarn in the most absurd way to their selfish motives and introducing hatred among different religions. He should have consolidated the different groups of Islam and showed the world the uniqueness and greatness of Islam over other religions and attracted them. Instead his barberous ways of attacking his own people and ohers for no reason and trial of creating a fear psychosis among others will not work and he and his group will be eliminated from the earth soon. Whon so ever wanted to saw the seed of wind have reaped the cyclone. The fate of Osama will not be different. For him it may not be unexpected since his actions will justify his deeds. But if his survivl prolongs the damage done to the humanity will be more. So we have to pray for the almighty's bliss to eliminate the satan at the earliest

His mad love towards his own community and his thought that his community is better and superior to any other community makes him hate America.

May be he also has any personal grudge towards them, which makes him turn his people against them.

The idea that Terrorists hate everyone or want to destroy societies because they don't conform to their religion is laughable. Like any human being, those in control of terrorist organisations are formed by their developmental processes, their life experiences.

In the case of Osama Bin Laden, any number of reasons combine to result in a Jihad against America. He was raised as a devout Wahhabi Muslim, and as a result he wants to purify Islam. This essentially combined badly with expansion by America and its allies into the Middle East in the first and subsequent Gulf Wars, and extended Bin Laden's dreams into establishing a pan-Islamic Caliphate, resulting in his war on America and the West.

There are no doubt many other factors. While I have no problem with people citing their opinions, doing so and claiming that they're fact, or allowing them to stereotype all terrorists as being 100% evil is misleading. That won't help anyone.

It might be worth remembering that the most effective form of terrorism is State-Sponsored Terrorism, as they have more resources to choose from. You might also want to consider that anyone with Bin Laden's upbringing has the potential to become a politically-minded, dangerous and violent individual.

Osama bin Laden hates his own children and made one of his wives give formula to them with a spoon because he thought bottles were erotic paraphernalia.  Read the book Inside the Kingdom by Carmen bin Laden, who was married to one of the bin Laden brothers.  She never met Osama, but she has quite a few insights about how odd their family can be.  Osama does not like anyone, bottom line.  Osama and Hitler both have a special place in hell, even if that may not be a real place.
