Sorry to hear that Irohner. The only thing I can offer is an hour of solid walking or other exercise if you are mobile and able.

If you have insomnia than you could go get meds from a doctor or in some states get prescribed medical marijuana smile

erm, after reading more closely though, obviously you aren't going to go to a doctor right now.

I've heard peanut butter and milk have something in them that can help you sleep.

Tantrum - good suggestions. I will try both.

Earnest - I'm not quite 1,000 years old yet! Will try a walk. I'm on a full week now with almost no sleep and not eating well. But I think your suggestions are good ones.

GFIA- LOL! luv it! Used to sing it to my kids as well.

Cls1321 - I don't think it's persistent insomnia -- just stress. I'd rather forego the meds route, but thank you for the suggestion nonetheless. Oh, and I am headed for a big PB sammy wth a side glass of milk right now.

Oh dear! Sorry about that irohner! I asked because some people are not able bodied, in that case I would not muck around, and go for exhaustion! Works for stress.

No offense taken. I'm just so worried about the grandbaby that's ill, I really haven't eaten in a couple of days and can't focus on squat and can't sleep. I'm probablly sounding like a broken record on the forums, but it's all-consuming right now.

It is easy for me to understand that. When any of my GKids are crook it stresses the hell out of me too. I had a few days like this recently, and tried many things to get sleep. If the hard exercise doesn't work, I would go for a joint myself. Less harmful than the heavy prescription stuff. I hope the precious one is well soon.

A glass of warm milk is said to do the trick ... or reading one of my long forum responses - lol! smile

I'll take your advice, Yoshi. Off to the forums it is! (Gold help me -- not a religious thread....)

You shouldn't worry about "sounding like a broken record".  Most parents/grandparents can more than understand what you must be going through.

What if you turn the lights down to a nice relaxing "arrangement" and try to watch some mindless tv (like re-runs of Frasier or some other sitcom)?  Turn the volume to a boring, low, tone.  If you can't concentrate on it, that's fine.   Get comfortable, but don't even think in terms of trying to sleep.  Just try to relax just a little.  If you fall asleep, fine.  If not, at least maybe you could have a little time not quite as stressed as if you're up and trying to concentrate on things.  Carbohydrates and fats help get a body out of a "stress response" state, so I'd think having that milk and sandwich is a good idea.  People can't go from "65 mph to sleep".  They have to "slow down" (mentally) just a little first.  (Just my "offering" on possible ways to calm down just a little bit.  Even if you don't sleep much, if at all, at last you'll have given yourself some rest time.)  Even if you could try to "give your brain permission to take an hour off", maybe that could help tame some of the stress.

(I know you may have done this stuff or that it may not be of any help, but just thought I'd offer my "version".  It wasn't a grandchild (I don't have any yet), but in our family we had a similar thing with a nephew.  I almost think you just have to get through each minute as comfortably as possible for now.)

Thanks Lisa. I'm not trying to go from 65 mph to sleep. I'd be happy with 65mph to 60. I thought I'd been through extreme stress in my life, obviously not. I appreciate all of your suggestions and will try them. I'm on 48 hours now no sleep, so  fingers crossed!

When my daughter was not quite six weeks old she was hospitalized because I couldn't wake her up, and the doctors weren't sure she didn't have septicemia (because she was "just this side" of still being a newborn).  I couldn't believe how long I was able to remain awake (just because I couldn't sleep).  It was some time late into the third day that the test results came back (ok), and I was finally able to "pass out".  I would have thought people would start to hallucinate by that long, but it turns out we just get zombie-like and foggy-headed.  One way or the other, though, the hours do pass and we find a way get through these terrifying times.   (I've got some shamefully long and boring Hubs and forum posts that would put anyone to sleep, but I'm guessing you can't concentrate to read.  smile  )
