   When asked, "Where do I start to make money online?" - what do you tell someone?
   
   I was asked that today by a friend, not the first time.  Just curious where you all send your friends/family for help on this.

   The best advice I can give them is to speak from my own experience. I let them know about the sites I write on and about how soon they could expect to see an income.
   I let them know what I have tried that doesn't work, and warn them about the choices that are most likely scams and/or have a higher risk of giving your computer a virus.
   I explain that there is no "get rich quick" method that I have ever round to really exist & that the best way to make money is to earn it.
   Working online is the same as working off-line: it is still work.  If you aren't willing to put in the time, don't expect to see any results.

   I tell them to sell their old books on Amazon, and sell some old stuff on eBay. Once they get over the idea that it is tough to earn online, they can get into more advanced techniques.

   I would say that it will depend on what they want to do - but with Kat, have to agree: can only advise on what I've done:
   
   Build AdSense self-hosted sites, sell affiliate products (to actual physical products) using Commission Junction, Amazon, etc., and freelance write.
   
   Are they after a passive or active income?  Does it matter?
   
   Personally, as a writer, if they can get to learn SEO and copywriting, there's LOTS of money to be made - and NO END to the work!

   In my opinion, the first option is to start with Affiliate Programs.  You promote products that others create, to your audience.
   They normally offer a good percentage on sales and you don't need to follow-up on customers, shipping of goods or anything.
   
   Start-up is normally free.  So be careful on those who charge.

   Just wanted to thank you all for the answers - I was having some trouble answering only because it's been a while: I'm in the trenches online, making good money - but forget the "where do I start?  how did I get here" answers.
