In one way or another, arn't we all sales people?

And taking it one step further, regardless of the business in we're in, arn't we all really in the people business?  I just did a Hub called "Some Wisdom For Sales People - This Means You" where I examine the value of putting the client's needs first, which lead me to this question...

In a way what you say is true, but there are poor salesmen too amidst us! When we talk of putting client's need first, mostly we put our own selfish need for long term survival with the client!

Yes we are. Much of our interactions with others is selling ourselves. Even when interviewing for a job or trying to get a date, we are basically selling ourselves. We are presenting or best features and qualities and trying to get a "sale."

This question has been apotheosized as regarding human interaction. Sure, sometimes you have to convince people of things, but at the end of the years, you can only choose your end.

It is probably true that most of us are Sales People to the extent that we are usually trying to promote our ideas, our opinions.   It's said that 'Oratory is the art of Persuasion.'  We might not all be orators or public speakers, but we nearly all think that our opinions are right and the rest of the world needs to know about them.   Such thinking seems to come with being human.

In selling products or services, we first need to convince ourselves that they're worthwhile, I think.   If we can't do that we stand (to use Australian vernacular) 'Buckley's hope' of selling them to anyone else.

Agreed we are all in the people business. And agreed that we are all sales people in a sense. We "sell" the opposite sex on having a relationship, we "sell" employers on hiring us, we "sell" clients on going business with us, and we "sell" friends on the fact that we are a good investment of their time and energy.

Absolutely, we sell ourselves every day in every way.  We are all judged by what people see in us.  We step out of our front door to go about our busy lives were every person we come into contact with judges us.  Be it the girl in the grocery shop, the postman or the little child in the doctors surgery.  We are in fact our own business tool, our most effective business partnership. Everything else can be learnt. So remember put your best foot forward, wear a smile and enjoy life.
