Hi Grace,
I haven't found a way to see word count in HubPages yet. But what I did find is that, for me, it works better to write my hubs in Word, which will give me a word count as I write, and then copy and paste into the hub page.
This makes it easier to track, and easier to work on whenever I want, as I can take it with me on my thumb drive and work on the article even if I can't access HubPages.
Good luck.
There is a word count on Hubs, but it does not show up at first. On Hubs that have been published, and on Hubs that have not been published but that you have "done editing," you can click the Stats button at the top of the Hub (when you are signed-in to your account). Click the "Hub Metrics" tab, and the first line is the Word Count.
When you first work on a Hub, that number will not show up, though; it takes a little time for the system to check it and show the number (I believe... I'm pretty sure... ). If you are wanting to keep up with a word count on Hubs-in-progress, the best thing to do is either to compose in a word-processing program (as mentioned in another answer) or to estimate as you go.
You can develop an eye for estimating a word count by doing this: Look at some of the Hubs you have already published and see how much of the screen the words fill up. How many times do you need to scroll down to finish seeing the words? Check the word count. Use those clues (known word count; appearance on-screen; number of scroll-downs) to help with estimating - but remember that it is an estimate only, and the actual word count will show up in the stats after the system finishes checking.
In case you have not caught up, the latest version of the Text Capsule now has a word count inbuilt! It only gives the count of each capsule.
I follow a system similar to Aficionada but I don't worry too much about the word count if it interferes with the context of the Hub.

On another thread, a Hubber suggested that if HubPages had a minimum word count, it would prevent some spammers.I know that a very low word count can get a Hub flagged as substandard, but perhaps it's set too low at the moment?

My goal is to write 50,000 words for the month of MarchI am setting this goal so I can get back into the swing of things because it has been a while since I have submitted anything to Hub Pages. This is how I will attempt to do this:Submitting new hubs. I am finishing up my...

What happened to my little blue tip box I have become so attached to? I let me know how many words I had, if an image was not clear enough, and let me know when my hub was presentable and ready to publish.

I am writing a piece now, that is currently 3000 words, and still rising; as things stand it appears that it will be around 4000 words. In the past I have written two part articles on HP and they tend not to fly, so I don't want to divide it in two. It would be okay to split it in two and move it...

Is there a way to check the number of words that are in a hub without going into the edit mode? Thanks in advance!

This is really not a big deal, but I am curious why there are two separate word counts for hubs. I am editing a hub and the new feature shows a word count of 1287. When I click on "done editing" and then look at the word count under the "stats/hub metrics" it shows...
