How do you choose a topic to write about?
I'm just getting started and would like to know how the rest of you go about deciding what to write about. I'll admit, I'm dragging my feet and feeling a bit timid, but I think if/when I get something into my head I will have no problem getting it written. Also, are there format guidelines people like to follow? I really need an icebreaker. I am looking for what motivates you to write, not necessarily what you think will make money, although that would also be helpful.
For me personally I usually choose a large topic and write several hubs that are related. For example this month is "You Think You Can Write Online" contest and I am writing my entries on any thing and everything to do with upstate New York where I was born and raised.
A lot of people have said write about what you know and love, that way it won't seem like a chore and you'll enjoy it more.
If not, you could always research a topic that you want to know more about, and then write about that?
You don't sit down and think of something to write. Spend your day as you always do. Go shopping, clean the apartment, spend time with your friends. When you disagree with something, write about it. Anything that you come across during your regular day.
For example, when you're shopping and you see a high priced purchase that shouldn't be worth that much. Write about it. Why is it priced so high? How much does it cost to make in the first place? Etc.
Choosing Article Titles Being a writer is one of the most fulfilling jobs in the world. And if you happen to be a writer who makes a living out of it, then you are a member of a very exclusive club: that of those who does what he or she loves. This... read more
I have spiritual insights that visit me every now and then, especially when I've just done some contemplating. (That's why quiet is so important to me.)
I try to remember them by making a short note on my phone, then come back to writing as soon as I have a longer amount of time to sit down to it.
I was stuck with that for a long time.
Here is the key.. do lot more reading.
Park the thought of writing for a while and start to read articles that interest you to the fullest(Say to yourself - this day is only for reading). Read the entire article without leaving a single point. While reading, it can happen that something strikes your mind or you dis-agree with that writing or there is another view the author has missed. Keep developing those thoughts and one day you will feel content upon finishing a great hub.
You will then comeback and vote this up!!(Just kidding)
While hopping hubs, I will read a great article and realize that you wrote it(This can be true!!)
Also, with more reading, you will be able to judge the quality of writings, which in turn helps in judging your own content. May be, this is for later!
Just an analogy that can ring some bell in you : I am a software developer. I know how to write code. If I drag myself to write code, I will do something, but its is good for none including me. Then, I started to go around to see others' code/software and realized that there can be some room for improvement. I am content with what I am coding now. In some time, I will be doing something new rather than extending something that already exists. Pretty long, but hope it helps!!
you don't need to follow a topic !! but the topic follows you in your daily life !!
just keep your self motivated that you have to write something about this !!
for example --
1. you can write about ur office life
2 about your marriage life
3. about kids
4 about love
5. about dating
almost anything....keep your options open !!
whatever you been through ,,when you write about that ...there is always feel in that !! thanks
