   Passion or obligation?
   
   In a difficult situation right now. I love movies and filmmaking with, yes, a passion. But I'm also in school right now for nursing because I'm from a poor family and financial obligation is the logical thing to do. As days go by, I find myself wanting to do film with all of my heart more and more -- but then I've set upon a new college already and it's an industry with more job openings. And I do like helping people. My take is: wait it out. Finish school, work, and then follow my passion. Anyway... what's your take on that dilemma of passion or obligation?

   Obligation can allow you to follow your passions later and with greater ease and flexibility. You gotta do what you gotta do.

   Similar situation that I was in, so I will tell you my experience. I was set on Photography, took a whole year, but realized no money came out of it...good at least. So, I dropped out and now have a way better job..that I actually love. Now I would say Passion is everything, but sometimes good things happen out of Obligation.....

   I think your take and that of the first couple of answers is the most sensible plan.
   
   You need to build a foundation for yourself in this life and from there opportunities will arise. With age comes more perspective and trust me, that will only enhance your filmmaking when you eventually make it a reality.

   You have an obligation to take care of your family.  For folks who dont take on or have such responsibilities they follow their passion.

   I know the obvious answer would be passion--of course.  But realistically we all have obligations that we must fulfill.  We have to do what we have to do and sometimes we have to set our dreams aside.
   
   Don't give up your passion, just put it on hold for a little while.  Very few of us get to follow our passion--and I admire those that do and make it work.

   You have an obligation to follow your passion even if it leaves you in the streets cold and hungry.  I don't have anyone to take care of or anything like that so I can't really say I have the greatest perspective of your situation.
   
   I look at it like this anyone who ever made it in anything was dedicated to it. If you want to make films, make films. Don't listen to these people telling you "oh have a backup  or a strong foundation and you can follow your passion more easily." That is a straight up LIE! If you do that then you will only ever half a** anything to do with your passion.
   
   I mean no offense but people lie to themselves and say "it's okay i can put this or that on the back burner and come back to it." No you can't do you think Steven Spielberg said to himself I'm just going to be a nurse for a little while and do movies on the side ? Did Jimi Hendrix say that he was going to be a construction worker and do music on the side ?
   
   No if you can even question not following your passion it's not real then is it.
   
   You got to do what you got to do to pay the bills, I do understand that.

   Looking at your profile The Jet, I see you have many years ahead of you. I don't see why you can't do both. With a little thought and creativity you may be able to do some documentary film work. Begin an independent film maker with smaller films that can be done on your PC if possible (remember I am ignorant on the mechanics of film editing) Using nursing as the subject may open doors to both the creativity process and that of responsible committment.    Well both obligation and passion are ok but think about the future outcome. Which one has a great result? is it passion or obligation. I suggest you continue your education in nursing but also as part time, try to see if you can create a gold nugget out your passion.

    My two cents is put film on hold until you get your nursing degree.  Then get yourself a part time nursing job so you can pay for the necessities and use the rest of the time to build up your film portfolio.
    
    However in order to support yourself on a part time salary you will have to be willing to make some sacrifices such as not having a car and/or living with roommates in a tiny apartment.
    
    As much as we would like to think that people should follow their dreams regardless of the consequences the truth is until you can be guaranteed the sources of your shelter, food and clothes you won't have the time or energy to be creative.  If you look at the world the countries with the greatest number professional creative people are also the wealthiest.  The poorer countries spend all their time trying to get food, clothes and shelter for themselves that they have no time or energy left for creative industries.
