Is age really just a number?  Does it necessarily denote experience?  Does it matter?  Opinions?

I don't think it matters that much.
There have been 12 years who teach at colleges.
There are many 50 year olds who practically don't know anything.

My experiences are worthless if I spent 100 years experiencing my room. What's important is the knowledge extracted from experience and that is what makes history, biology, and the other fields.

Good question I was actually thinking about this as I wrote a hub in regards to something like this.  I think as we get older as well as mature it doesn't and for some it does because no one wants to be anyones mother or father.  When you realize what life is truly about age doesn't matter in the long run because every individual that comes into your life regardless of age has a lesson to teach as well as learn.  If you are talking relationship and long term wise, both individuals definitely has to be on the same page so to speak

My number is 56 and I can tell you it is just a number.  I have met people much younger than me who are wiser and people older than me who have not yet developed their wisdom.  It matters only if you feel that it does.  Experience is something that can be obtained at any age.

    Not exactly.
I personally consider that experience does not proportionately increase with one's age. It depends on different people.

yes, age does matter...its goes along with experience. The older you are the more you have lived but it doesn't mean that you have learned life's lessons.

OK, I am weird, so my answer is weird. Age, in my perspective, is meaningless. It is only a measurement and what it is measured to or with is the question. Usually age as a number is a social matter. I'll propose two thoughts on this. Both are factual.

First, I experienced retrograde amnesia at the age of 24. My previous life was basically wiped away or at least hidden in a dense fog. It took some years and still is ongoing for recall. But, getting to the point, am I 56 - my age, or am I 32. I had to relearn social amenities, relearn relationships, blah, blah, blah.

Second, this is hypothetical, there are two unique individuals.
A = at this split second on their birthday = 29 years old
B = at this split second birth = 0 years old

    One year passes.
    A = experienced 1/30th of their lifetime
    B = experienced a whole lifetime

    Who has lived the longest?

age is quite relevant in many cases. i remember as a kid listening to adults and thinking they have no idea. now i realise i had no idea.

Don that's the first answer given that is completely unrelated to the question.  I've been to nursing homes dozens of times, as a matter of fact I worked at one for 3 months.  Completely unrelated and irrelevant.

I believe over 20 year age difference can get a little weird.

actully i think age dose matter what intersts would i share with an older man i think peopple of the same age should date others there age it just makes more since to me i dont judge thoose that date older men but i do think they would be happier with someone there own age the maturty levles are differnt and i often see older men like to control younger women at least thats what i have seen

I do believe it is not the AGE that matters.

It is what you can gain in life experiences as you grow up. Some will never learn anything new while others are making new discoveries.

It is dependent on individuals. Hard to say what older people are better as we progress differently.

So, what matters most is what a person can learn in life.

People think this line is a joke, or a cliche (though to me, cliches only become so because they contain an enduring truth), but I believe in this one,

"Age is just mind over matter; if you don't mind, it doesn't matter"

Ageism, whether directed at older or younger people, is just another form of stereotyping. Everyone has the capacity to surprise others with what they have to say, but too many people make assumptions that prevent them from even listening, and often, learning.

    That's my opinion anyway.

age matters in many cases respectively in some government/civil laws...

age would also matter in one's personality. i.e. you know a guy who is 30 yrs old yet he/she still acts like a 14yrs old...age would now just  be a number!

age doesn't really affect experience...every human being have different experience in life...! age is age. experience is experience! its all about personality, dude!

in case of love affections, age doesn't matter..i guess it would only matter if you are 30yrs and your partner is 7 yrs old...Haha

I think it depends on the situation and the people involved.

Age in my opinion is not that important in most situations because the actual number doesn't change who you are as a person.

I think age importance is different for everyone, in different  situations, since everyone is so different.  For example, I wouldn't date a man 20 years my senior, because the age "bothers" me in terms of having a romantic relationships.  But someone else my age may not be bothered by a 20 age gap.   I however would have no issue hanging out with someone 20 years my senior, just as mates, as long as they were cool.  On the other hand, someone else my age may take issue with that.

In terms of experience though, again it is dependent on the person.  Some people turn into horrible people with experience, others improve.  So it doesn't really matter about age or experience in most situations, if a person is a great person, they just are and they should be taken for who they are right now.

But age in terms of dating would bother me, I think I would feel ridiculous like a child if I dated a really old man.

So basically it is dependent on so many different factors that there really aren't any hard or fast rules with regards to age.

Yes its just a number. what matters in life is fulfilling your purpose. I assure you if you focus on that, you won't take notice of the years. Its a shame if you leave here without impacting lives. Stay Focused

Countries like China/Japan which had put restrictions on the number of children a couple can produce are now in trouble, because the number of old people are outnumbering the number of young people.

Needless to say, those old people bring lots of experience to the society, but ultimately, its the young blood that can produce something productive.

Hence Chinese govt. is considering allowing two children per couple now.

Conclusion: Age is neither a mere number, nor it necessarily denote a "useful" experience. It does make a difference!!!
