when i married two years ago, i kept my own name, partly because it was the name on my diploma, and partly because my dad had only daughters and i wanted to keep his name in play. it  just seemed natural. also it was easier than changing my name - no paperwork necessary. my husband doesn't care. he just wants to spend our lives together. he hasn't got an ounce of chauvinism.

in an earlier engagement to a very different guy, i had agreed to hyphenate my name if he would, too. he wasn't happy. he also thought it was okay to hit me. the name thing wouldn't have been a deal-breaker. the hitting was. he told me that 80% of guys were just like him. luckily, i only needed one of the feminist 20% of guys. i found him. he's a the sweetest guy, a gem and a keeper.

I am an old fashioned girl so I plan on taking my husband's last name when I get married.  However, if he has an awful last name or just something that sounded silly and I really despised then I would tell him that sorry I just had to keep mine.

I think that before i adopted her last name, I would have it hyphenated but thats just me. i would not expect her to change her last name if she didn't want to.

As a man of tradition, I would want my wife to take my last name. I have a rather nice last name, so I wouldn't see why she would not want it. Why would I take my wife's last name? That is just, not wrong but, I'm not sure I would want to, and it wouldn't be respected in today's society. I'm pretty sure I would lose all of my guy friends, and they would say that I am "whipped."

I did keep my own name when I was married. The fact the marriage ended (probably) doesn't have anything to do with that, though. LOL.
