What advice would you give to a person going on his/her first cruise?
relax - enjoy yourself - don't try to eat some of everything all at once.
There will be lots of food - 24 hours a day - pace yourself.
Have a great time

Make sure you have a decent outfit if they have formal dinners. I have seen people turned away who show up in crocs and a tank top. Try not to get sucked into buying a lot of alcohol on the ship; that's where they make all of the profit. You may find a better deal in the duty-free shop if they have one on board. Have fun and bring sunscreen. Oh, and if you're out of the U.S., make sure to let your credit card company know.
Bring plenty of clothing for cold weather, hot weather, and everything in between because of air conditioning, etc. If you are not familiar with being on the water, bring something for seasickness-gravol is the best. Pace yourself. I found that going on tours when I was in Greece was best to keep track of time. If we were late or missing, our leader went looking for us. When you are traveling by yourself, if you are late or get lost no one knows until it is too late. I don't even want to mention if you went missing. I just don't consider it safe for a woman to travel alone anymore. mom did it all the time when she was young.
My husband and I went on a cruise to the Bahamas years ago on our honeymoon. The one thing that I remember is sitting at the dinner table and feeling big waves hit the side of the boat. It was enough that we felt like we were moving with the waves, not scary just weird. Walking up and down the steps can feel awkward at times also as the ship is moving. Other than that you won't believe the food and ice sculptures, they are really great- you could eat around the clock if you wanted to, but I don't recommend that. The entertainment that they have on the cruises are a lot of fun. You are going to have a great time!
be careful what you buy in the duty free shop, the cruise I was on advertised 4 cartons of cigarettes for around 100 dollars. I only bought two, but when I went thru customs I found out I could only bring in 1 carton! Luckily the customs lady asked if anyone was with me and said to say the other carton was my friends! Also, alcohol is very expensive so either try to sneak some on with you (my friends have used mouthwash bottles) or buy an open bar card if they offer it.
Thank you all for the advice. It sounds like my only true issue will be controlling my appetite. I love food. I might gain five pounds.
Don't try to eat and drink everything on the first day and be friendly with everyone.

One of my best friend's father passed away VERY unexpectedly in his sleep last night. My friend is distraught. I've offered to bring her family dinner tonight, but that's taken care of. We've set up a schedule to bring dinners to her house so she doesn't have to deal with...
