   Should it be a requirement that, in order to vote, you pay income taxes to support this nation?
   
   Rather a simple question really.  Approximately 51% of the wage earners in this nation pay nothing,not a cent.  Should they have a voice in how the rest of us want our money spent?

   I agree with that...even if some people could only afford to pay a small, token amount of taxes, it would add up fast and help us close the budget deficit.

   reasoneable question but if you are a citizen and are 18 or older you have the right to vote! Just because a student is going to school full time and doesn't have a job, should not prevent them from having a say in the direction of their country.  i think what your question should be is how do we close tax loopholes so that 51% of wage earners do pay taxes

   The way my savings is being eaten away by the economy I may be among those with too little income to owe taxes. I am more in favor of tax reform with a fair tax amendment and  outlawing income tax.

   Only if you are required to, by law. There are laws that exempt certain people from not paying taxes. I DO think that a valid identification card should be required. Or else dead people will start voting more. You know, like in "Black Sheep". :-)

   Personally I think all citizens over the age required should be allowed to vote. There should be no limits on their rights.
   
   Using whether they pay taxes as a decision as to voting rights is not satisfactory.
   
   As a resident alien in the US I paid taxes of all varieties, but had no voting rights. Should we then give rights to aliens to vote if they pay taxes? I did not see this as an infringement of my rights, after all I had voting rights in my home countries elections yet paid no taxes there.

   Well we could return to the founding fathers rules and only white men who own land have the right to vote. No one else! I hope we as a people realize that these restrictions are not practical and disriminatory. Money cannot decide if a person is worthy to vote or not. Why must we monetize everything in this country. Money already owns every politician in this country what else do we want? Let's try to get the money out of politics and let government really be For the People and By the People.

   I think that this is just silly.
   
   I can understand the idea behind it, that those who are using tax breaks and loopholes to avoid paying taxes when they should, should not have a say in how the laws and government is run. Doing this, however, hurts MANY other people that work just as hard as anyone else.
   
   People that work for charities, churches, and other things that are tax-free would be hurt by this. Students and unemployed people will be hurt by this. Very low income earners will be hurt by this.
   
   The idea that every citizen in the country over the age of 18 has a vote is part of what makes the United States the land of opportunity. When you start restricting rights like that, it becomes the land lead by the privileged few (even moreso than it already is...but that's another rant entirely )

   It seems zduckman needs to bone up a bit.  The Federal Reserve does not receive all the income tax money collected.  That money goes into the general revenue fund.  The interest on the debt is then paid out of that revenue fund.  Unfortunately, the federal government doesn't apply 100% of the monthly collections to the debt.

    The founders of the nation thought that there should be a property ownership requirement in order to vote. They also thought voters should be white, 21, and have male reproductive organs in order to qualify.

    I say "NO"! What has one got to do with the other? "Legal Citizenship" and a knowledge of the candidates and their platform should be what is important.

    Yes - they should have the vote.
    Who shouldn't? Convicted Felons - they're trying to allow them to vote now. I REALLY don't like this idea. A large percentage of them are Illegals and the rest lost that right when they committed the crime(s).
    What would really interest me is some sort of test whereby all people would be required to have knowledge of why they are voting. Half the people who do vote know nothing other than "Aunt Sally told me this guy would make sure I keep getting unemployment for the rest of my life 'cause I'm sure not going to take a job at Micky D's!"
