Could a devout religious believer please outline what they see as the purpose of life?
I read so much hate, bile and prejudice on here from people who claim to be Christian, Muslim or whatever. Could some of them please just outline for me what they see as the point of life. Personally I am not religious in any doctrinal way but have deep spiritual values. I live life with love, compassion and empathy towards all whom I come in contact with, without needing to live according to some written word created thousands of years ago.
I've thought about this around a lot of campfires. I think our purpose is to have a relationship with God through his Son, Jesus. From that, accepting his forgiveness and his sacrifice that made it possible, comes good works (or the things you mention above). No you don't need to know God to do those things. Why not know God? Why not know his love, personally? Jesus said he is truth. Truth sets you free. Goes way beyond doing good.
If you are living life with love, compassion and empathy you're doing it!
Isn't religion a map for travelling along those roads? Some people have different maps that they follow but surely the destination is the same.
Some people don't need a map..they just know the path!
Happy travels - might see you along the path!!
Dear Angeltrader,
assuming you feel this is not the only time around, I think of life as a playground / school experience where you get to learn and un-learn things, make wonderful memories, and respect yourself and those around you. We are all a bunch of semi-dirty potatoes in the same cooking pot. At the end, we are all shiny and fresh. Believing in a benevolent God or Higher Power is necessary - most of life's troubles are self-made, not handed down. Do the best you can, respect your parents and superiors, appreciate those good souls closest to you. Make each day - no matter how small a thing - a good day and never ever give up hope. As long as there is life, everything is possible.
I believe in the bible and believe in God in three parts (father, son, and holy spirit) my faith and beliefs help me to appreciate everything God has done for his children (the human race as a whole not just one specific religion or ethnic group). God the Father tells us to live for Him and to bring others to a saving knowledge of his son Jesus Christ. I must admit sometimes I do not do this fully, but I am working on living my life to serve my Lord Jesus. The purpose of life s to serve and worship God in all we do. Wether that is going to work everyday serving the community or traveling the world spreading his word in whatever we do we must do it for Him.
I worship God through my attitude everyday, I often have to check myself to see if my actions would be pleasing to Him.
Not sure if this answers your question or not but it is how I feel and what I think is the purpose of life.
First of all, why do we need a purpose? Does a horse or a whale have a purpose in life? Elephants have bigger bodies and brains than we do, what is their purpose?
Having a purpose in life is a delusion created by religionists. We don't need a purpose, we exist.
We are what we are and that is all we will ever be. Strangely enough, this is purpose enough for mankind and equally purpose enough for everything in the universe.
Once you realize that we don't need a purpose, we can decide for ourselves what we want to do with our lives. It's totally up to you to live your life and make the universe a better or a worse place as you go along.
No more blaming "the devil" or praising some "god". You are in control. Go out and live!
To love one ye on another.........
It applies not only to married folks but to outsiders...................
"the purpose of life" to please the creator! "the work of his childern" to know him!
I recently come to notice my purpose in life. before I do mention that I just want to ask everybody another question... what in this life is guaranteed to every each indiviual?...
some may say...????
only death
Death is the only thing that is guaranteed in this life, and nothing but death.
my purpose in life
to worship god and associate nothing with him
I not going to explain in to depth why this is my purpose but i will touch on my aruguement for it.
It dont make sense that my purpose would be to live to only, lets say go clubbing once a week blowing away my pay cheque when on the other side of the planet my brothers and sister of mankind can starve?... id say selfish! or even to just sleep 24/7...why have i got a brain again? i might as well have been born a fish! :0. God created us for one reason which was just to worship him. Not to worship idols.
To even understand why this is my purpose i think your going to have to understand the idea of God. Please do contact me If you want to understand my purpose further and i will be glad to tell you my story .
I am Christian by faith/spirit, but I don't necessarily believe in religion. It's the religion that leans far right that I believe makes people hateful.
The purpose of life is to help other people, especially those who are less fortunate in some way. So, if it's to help a developmentally disabled child learn how to basically help themselves, even if they need someone to check in, would be good, or to help children, etc.
And while no, we don't need an ancient book to guide us, just let us remember that what we don't remember in the past may have us making the same historical mistake in the future.
I've also wondered why some non-believers are hateful toward religion...

~ Why do you need to follow any religion? ~I am just curious as to why people need to, or choose wanting to believe in, follow, and participate in any religious affiliation? What drive people to believe in their religions? Is it simply because of tradition, upbringing, or an actual spiritual...

It occurs to me that many Hubbers have had not-so-positive interactions with organized religion and its promoters. Here's your chance to shout at the devil (so to speak).Oh yes -- if you've had outrageous (in a good way) experiences, feel free to share them here as well

What do you think about Religion?Does Religion help us improve our everyday life, or is it just a matter of belief to a higher being?

Just a question, but it would seem if there really were no God, then Atheists couldn't exist. Is Atheism a religion? They definitely seem to be unified by a common belief.
