Were you spanked, whipped with a belt or received a stern talking to when you were a child?
i got the crap beat out of me when i was a kid. sticks, belts or whatever was at hand. in the end, it made me a better parent because it showed me what i should never do to my kids.
All of the above -- at the time, I think Mom just plain couldn't figure out anything else to do. Every single wooden spoon in the house got broken over my rear end.
Gosh no. There was a "no hitting" rule in my house growing up... that went for parents too. I think that if you hit someone, that will only teach them to hit.
I am glad you were raised by normal people. The world is full of hypocrites who punish their kids for swearing, when they do the very same thing every chance they get. Or they hit their kids and tell them not to hit. This logic is absurd.
never whipped but yes to the others, I never felt as though my parents hated me or did it out of anger. In the end I feel it was the right thing for them to do.
Absolutely. We got a slipper whacked across our bare backsides - and it hurt!! We got talkings to as well - loads of them.
At school they still had 'the belt' and that would crack down hard on your palm right the way up your wrist - I had bruising for two days after getting the belt at High School, I think I was in second year at the time, and had got caught smoking. The second time I got the belt was from a stuck up old bird who taught cookery. My friends and I thought she would be out of the class room for a while and we started mucking about with the dough and other ingredients we had been given for cooking. My dollop of pastry landed on the classroom floor where it had been thrown by my friend and we all got the belt since old 'stuck up' came waltzing back in and caught us. She was wee woman but god she could crack the belt. She missed my palm and whacked me right up the side of my thumb - it was agony!!
Oh dear me, yes! It taught me to be better (whatever better means!) or at least shied away from doing the negative things. It was mostly from my younger age when discipline was mostly needed. It's a big part of Asian family life-- this whipping thing. I think that's why most people here grew up very respectful.
spanked and stern talking was almost an everyday routine ... whipped with a belt no ... whipped with a hose pipe yes. basically anything and everything ... slippers, shoes, cooking utensils... the works.
I think i probably needed it to learn and to respect.
Yes, all three. I don't remember a belt being used, but we were hit with various things. Mom would cut the ball off of a paddle-ball paddle and use that. I was spared a good paddling one night because she couldn't find the paddle. I found out later that my brother had thrown it onto the roof of the house! I guess he had done something that he was expecting a paddling for! Looking back, I can say that we had deserved whatever we got! No scars, emotional or otherwise.
By my dad mostly - my bro and I got whipped with a belt. Mom never disciplined - it was always, "wait til your dad gets home!" She spanked me once bare bottom with a hairbrush but that was the only time I could remember. My dad had two leather belts (one thick, one thin) that he hung behind the bathroom door. After we had done something bad he would grab us by our ear, hair, etc. and make us stand in the corner for a while. That was terrifying - waiting for the belt. Then he would tell us which belt to go get and bring to him. He would fold it over and snap it which always terrified me! Then he would make us bend over either the couch, chair, bed, etc. and he would whip us. Of course stern talking to was included! My dad is from Guatemala and his mom always whipped him as a child. So...I guess he felt he had to do the same. Most of my beatings I felt I didn't deserve but he always found something to whip us for.
My parents rarely spanked us and neither ever used anything but their hands, but there were loads and loads of getting a stern talking to, usually preceded by quite a lot of screaming and sometimes things being thrown around the house. My mother smacked me across the face one time for being extremely, extremely disrespectful. I never said what I said again. My husband was beat as a child by whatever was handy, belt, tree branch, hand, etc, for even the most minor infractions.
I was spanked 5 times. It did nothing but get to think of possible suicide. I don't spank my kid. And I offer no apologies to anyone for my choice.
Yes I was it hurt very bad.
Yes I also got spanked by my special education teacher in elementary school I think in the fourth grade
Yes I did. I got many from both my parents. I am glad that they cared enough to take the time to correct and teach me what not to do, to make good choices. I never felt abused. A spanking is not abuse. However abuse can be in the form of a spanking.

Do you believe in spanking children?

Something I've never understood in my life is why some people end relationships without telling any reason. Do people truly forget about their friends, love, relationships, and so on? What makes it so simple for anyone to cut themselves apart from someone so abruptly and unexpectedly? Is it a good...

If spanking is useful in creating better adults why aren't more adults better?Over 70% of parents now spank, in the 80's 90% spanked. When something bad happens involving a child people are quick to say the child needs their "butt whipped" "spanked", etc. So since most of the...

Is spanking a misbehaving child morally wrong?Wether you spank your children or not, do you think it's ok if a parents chooses to swat their kids on the bum as a form of discipline?
