What do you do to conserve fuel when driving?

Fuel prices are skyrocketing.  Unfortunately, driving yourself from point A to Point B is sometimes a necessity.  How do you improve mileage or at least save on fuel?

Maintain the correct air pressure in the tires, change the air filter on a regular basis, and try to drive at the same speed (not constantly speeding up and slowing down).

I usually only go to town on the two days I work.  The rest of the time, the car sits in the garage.  I drive a total of 16 miles in a week unless I visit my grandchildren.  I also tend to drive slightly slower than the speed limit because the are mountain roads and there are deer everywhere.

Outside of proper tire pressure and all of the other basics, if you drive like there is an egg under your brake pedal, it would help out a lot.  What I'm trying to say, is that people who abuse their brakes, have to constantly slow down and then accelerate at a more rampant rate as opposed to those that are not constantly hitting / stomping on the gas & brake pedals all the time.   Other than that, drive less and make more efficient trips when you do leave the house...

Use hills to coast (if it's an option.)  Carpooling also helps!

When i am low on fuel and driving home but don't feel like stopping until close to home.  I tend to coast while in neutral because it disengages throttle response and cuts your RPMs to basic running at 1000.  Also avoid A/C because the compressor also increases the RPMs as well.  Be easy on the gas when accelerating.  I recently bought a car that had twice the horsepower as my first and it saves on gas because it requires less power to get going as opposed to my original.  Went from 2006 Honda Civic to 2010 Accord.  So the switch the the V6 Smart Engine was a good call.  The engine will switch from 6 to 4 to 3 cylinders running depending on what your situation is, and this process is seamless.  If you're on highways the optimal speed it around 67 mph with cars made after 2009.  Also if you have a wing on your car it can sometimes be adjusted to alter the downforce on the vehicle.

I have done some outrageous things to save on gas, most of them were  just myths, but I had a few laughs. Some tips; keep your windows closed, air off, always check your tires for a good air pressure, make sure your coolant is fresh, and never go too long without changing your oil ( I change it 2000 miles before it is due). Save on gas, and your car will live longer too!

Do a search for hypermiling. You can find some good web sites that will tell you the best way to drive to get optimum fuel economy.
