Bottom of the ninth, two outs, bases loaded and your team is down by two.  Who do you want batting?

Choose any batter from the history of baseball and tell why you chose him.

Being a longtime Oriole fan, I'd say Frank Robinson. Nobody was as good in big-time situations in O's history than he.

George Herman Ruth----nobody was ever any better. Second choice would be Mickey Mantle.

Ichiro from players that I have seen in modern history.  Ty Cobb if Im going based on numbers.  I hear that Ted Williams was pretty impressive too.

It's my question and I can't choose between Ruth, Gehrig or Williams.  I might lean towards Williams but that may be because I saw him play; the other two were Yankees and, well, you know.... smile

I may show my baseball ignorance here Billybuc and even though I'm a Phillies fan I'd have to say I would want someone up there who could put wood on the ball more often than anyone else because a single into the outfield at least ties the game. The last guy to bat over .400 was Ted Williams, so he'd be my guy. Home run hitters tend to strike out a lot. All I'd want is a shot at tying the game which you have to do before you can win it!
    Thanks for the change-up!

Ted Williams is the first player to come to mind.  With a lifetime batting average approaching .350, I'm sure the "splendid splinter" would get a hit

Ha!!   You're kidding, right??    New York Yankees, DEREK JETER!!!!  Then after the game, I'd like him to come home with me!!      (I told you I'm bad)

George Brett.  He was one of two hitters in modern day baseball that have given .400 a run for their money.  The other was Tony Gwynn.  I choose Brett because he had a little more pop and gap power than Gwynn.

It depends on the speed of the runner on second base. If it's a fast runner I pick Tony Gwynn and if the runner isn't that fast, I would have to go with Edgar Martinez! No one in the history of Baseball has hit more clutch doubles and that's hard for a Mets fan who lives in Seattle to admit. That's why in my opinion, Maritnez belongs in the Hall of Fame.
