   I get most of my news related information filled in with many more facts and truth right here on line! Facebook, yahoo News, Twitter and hubpages!

   This is a difficult question.  There is some justification for being hesitant to trust mainstream news on foreign policy, because they were behind the push for war with Iraq.  They have since apologized, but I have fears with Iran becoming a threat, we may hear the same rhetoric again.  However, with domestic issues, they are more reliable.
   
   To go outside of the mainstream, you should still keep your critical thinking hat on.  What kind of source is it?  Does it produce reliable information?  Is it funded by a special interest that could affect objectivity?  Who are the main contributors?  Fox News has shown themselves to be completely inept when it comes to informing people.  Multiple studies have shown they do a pathetic job of informing people, so it is highly pertinent to evaluate alternative sources correctly. 
   
   You could also try looking for websites run by academics.  With science related information, you can look to the scientists themselves, and see the fact that the majority of climatologists believe the earth is warming mostly due to human activity.  Or with Supreme Court opinions, those are available for free online; and every politician now has a website, so if you think the media is "lying" about them, you can go read their opinions directly.  Or you could look at foreign news sources, and see how they interpret events happening in the United States.

   I read, watch, and listen to a wide variety of print, online, television, and radio news sources. If I hear a story on multiple media being presented with EXACTLY the same phrasing and position, it is most often a "talking point" from a given political view. If the story contains facts that the presenters present in similar yet slightly different fashions, it's most likely truth with individual "inflections" imposed upon it.
   
   I don't trust ANY single source of information and I ALWAYS try to find opposing views on the topic. I don't need anyone to tell me what I should think. I'm educated and responsible and must make my own decisions.

   First hand accounts are preferable above anything else. That being said, I think Sooner28 said it best. When it comes to reporters, news companies, journalist, etc... you can never be sure who you can trust until you check yourself. Then once you've checked thoroughly, you'll start to see through which medias tend to spin the truth or who outright lie most of the time. The thing to be careful of, is even alternative medias have issues with honest reporting, as do people spreading the word on social networks. If you make it a habit of checking with other medias, and checking with as many verifiable sources as possible, you'll be less likely to fall for any propaganda or subliminal tricks.

   I do not believe any source gives the entire truth, I read many sources, and compare them to see how many facts remain the same.  It seems everyone puts there own twist on the truth.  The days of reporting just the facts are gone, now all sources emblish the truth.  It is like the game "pass it on"  - one person starts a saying, but by the time it reaches the end, of say 20 people, very little of what started ends up the same.

   This is how I attempt to find the truth in the news media...I read the same news from a US news provider, from the BBC and from Al Jazeera.  I then read between the lines and figure the truth is somewhere in the middle.  Though I still refrain from calling it the truth, I called it educated speculation.

   There are some alternative sources online that appear to be more authentic or more critical that report from a different perspective, but it's hard to know for sure what really goes on out there. Take everything with a grain of salt and remember to refill your pepper grinder if you have pepper corns.
