Are there any natural or OTC remedies for eczema?
My 13yo daughter has it on her ankles and elbows. It just popped up in the last year or so. Her doctor prescribed a steroid cream, but it's not really helping. Does anyone know anything that might help, like Vaseline? Or sunshine? I've never had it before.
Eczema is sometimes considered an auto immune disease. It is best treated both internally, as well as externally.
I suffered with eczema for 30 years. After becoming a medical herbalist, I developed a special combination of organic herbs and oils to help treat and heal the symptoms of eczema.
Stay clear of Vaseline! Vaseline is made from petroleum, and will clog pores causing more damage.
Most eczema feels better when it is slightly moist. With eczema the skin dries out, leaving it red, scaly, and sometimes very sore.
It is best with most eczema cases to keep the area away from excessive water while inflamed, but still keep it moisturized.
Herbs we use in Organic Eczema Herbal Ointment and why:
Aloe (Aloe Barbadensis) - Relieves inflammation and soothes the skin.
Burdock Root (Articum lappa) - Minimizes the destruction of skin cells.
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) - Soothes inflamed, red skin. It has anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties
Chamomile (Chamomilla recutita) - Relieves itching. It has anti-inflammatory properties.
Chickweed (Stellaria media)- Helps to soothe skin and stops itching.
Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis) - Acts as an emollient for the skin and prevents infection.
Oatstraw (Avena sativa) - Helps stop itching, and is an emollient for the skin.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) - Helps to stimulate skin circulation to speed healing.
Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)- Relieves inflammation.
While steroids can help, they can have side effects!!!
Internally, a tea of burdock root, calendula and oatstraw would help detoxify. Combine herbs, and use 1/2 teaspoon for her age. Also, "cleaning" up the diet can help. Lots of fresh fruit, and veggies. Lots of water to help stay hydrated from the inside. Limit sugar intake. Limit processed foods as much as possible. You want to detox as much as you can.
Be well! You are welcome to contact me if you have more questions.

To help ease the irritating sometimes painful, itchiness of eczema, try putting porridge oats into a clean 'nylon' stocking, and knotting the whole up into a ball, then run it under the tap when filling your bath. It's very very soothing.
Black walnut hull tincture is excellent for eczema. It can be purchased or you can make your own by soaking green black walnut hulls in plain water to cover for about 24 hours. (You can make an alcohol based true tincture, but this would sting, and I'm told that the water-based tincture keeps very well. Keep refrigerated to ensure that it will keep.) Strain and bottle. Apply to the eczema (it stains) and take a teaspoon a day internally.
I am pretty sure that most people with eczema are just not drinking enough water. Dehydration means the kidneys can't efficiently throw off wastes, so some wastes are excreted through the skin, causing irritation and eczema. Drink LOTS of water to help cure this condition.
