What is "normal" fighting between brothers?

   What is "normal" fighting between brothers?
   
   Is it "normal" for two brothers very close in age to hit, kick, and punch each other as a form of play? At what point is it too much?

   Its too much when your house has been burned down, or one of the siblings has been hospitalized and your front room looks like a scene from a Stephen Segal/Jackie Chan or Chuck Norris movie after the fight. Thats when its time to call it a day and say that there are issues there that need addressed lol

   Hi Peeples-
   
   Boys, partricularly, but girls sometimes, will establish the pecking order - a normal activity.  Wrestling is most common, but the occcasional slap or fist can pop up in the heat of the moment.  Generally speaking, no big deal and its usually followed by an apology and true concern for the injury.
   
   Now, if the boys are literally duking it out, with black eyes, bloody noses, and lost teeth,  this is not reasonable.  Fighting to injure is not acceptable behavior.
   
   Family members need to clearly understand that there are limits when dealing within the family (and ultimately with all people).  This self control is sometimes difficult to master in adolescents, but should be well developed in older teens and adults.

   Speaking as one who has a brother barely a year older than me, we fist fought for a long time. I'm not sure if it's really to do with being brothers or not, but we did fist fight a lot. As we got older it became less frequent, until like now when it doesn't happen at all any more.

   This is totally normal, especially with boys. Try to break it up before one of them gets mad.  You have two totally different people shoved together all the time, living in the same house and sometimes sharing a room. Fights will occur, disagreements happen. Encourage them to get away from each other when they are getting on the other's nerves. Tell them that they do not have to like each other but they have to love each other so they might as well get along.
   If they are damaging each other, put a stop to it and do some heavy counseling with them. Explain to them that they will have each other covering their back for the rest of their lives so they had better start getting along. Damage will not be accepted.
   I had two boys that wold get in a fist fight every now and then. They are now in their twenties and the fights have dwindled way back. They hang out with each other all the time and the younger one is one of just a few who is allowed to babysit the older ones kids.

   i know when i was a kid, my brother and i fought pretty hard core. for us it was a way of releasing our hostilities that we couldn't on our parents.
