to protect it from other scavengers and other fellow dogs...they don't have other good option of hiding bones..other then burying..and since they love wandering outsides by burying they can also keep a close watch to their treasure and can enjoying licking it whenever they want it,,,
It's an innate behavior that is a throwback to before dogs were domesticated. Wild canids take part of their claim to a kill away from the feeding site and cached it for later consumption. I have seen my own dogs take what they are not hungry enough to eat and attempt to bury it in the funniest places - back seat of the car, for example.
Because its common-sense tells it that, if it were to leave them about, other dogs might get them. It has doubtless inherited the habit from its wild ancestors.
