How do you deal with a travelling husband (or wife)?
My husband travels every week for work, leaving me with two small children. What do you do to help you through the week?
Frequent contact with them keeps the connection going or sending a gift can make them special. Taking time for your self having two small children is important. So put them to bed and take a warm bath or give yourself a facial or get a sitter and have dinner with a friend or family member.
My husband use to travel all over the world to teach company courses. Sometimes, he would be gone for six weeks at a time; sometimes, more. We had four children. For me, it was about keeping a good attitude about it. I knew he was away because it was his job. He had that job when I met him, so I knew what I was getting into if I married him. If I started feeling like the weight of the household was on me, then I would start to get depressed. But, when I changed my attitude and realized that I, also had a job to do (which was keeping the household in tact), then I had better days. Plus, we talked every day no matter where he was. And, that did make things easier, too.
Fortunatelly I don't have to go through that, but my sister does, so I've seen her struggle with that for sometime... Right now it's better since he comes home every weekend, but for 8 or 9 months it was just once a month since he was working in quite a far away country... So they basically used Skype all the time, during dinner they used Skype to have dinner together, it was really funny, in a sort of sad way... It has been difficult times, sometimes the kids are sick and she's all alone with them and I'm far away too... The family that is near has been helping, but it's never the same... So, Skype may be the answer and phone calls, lots of... All the best to you and your children!
You have to keep yourself busy. Its hard but you have to do something to keep you occupied. For example, hang with your family and friends, go to a concert but anything that keeps you occupied
My husband was military and would be gone a year at a time. When he started leaving I had two small boys. We managed each day by keeping busy and having a routine. Each day would be something different to do, like park, library, play date, sports, etc. Routine is key is it is good for them but you as well. Keep bedtimes and wake times the same also.
