   Even if we did, who is to say that they would not exaggerate it or flat out lie about it?  Once you make it a part of politics, all bets are off.  Our one requirement as a nation should be strength and character. Those who have do not have a demonstrated background that has strong evidence of character traits have proven less than reliable in political office. We also need to lower the pay and the benefits to a level more in line with of the American worker.  If you want the job, want it for reasons other than just the six figured paycheck and the outrageous benefits.  I am not discounting religion in the least and it is certainly an important factor but with character and the courage of convictions, all the religion in the world will not save this nation from financial ruin...a path it is surely on and we dig that road deeper with each passing day.  We are devoid of character and leadership as a nation at present and it is evident in almost ever corner of government. WB

   not in the least. being christian doesn't make them honest, that's been proven time and time again. it's not what if any religion they are that matters, it's what they do while in office.

   There would be no point, politicians are very adapt at telling porkies, they would soon find a  way, 'in all sincerity, folks,' to lie their way out of that one.

   That question infers that the vast majority of Christians are so dumb they believe that they are the only ones who believe in God.
   
   Well, the truth is, most Christians are well aware that Jews, Muslims and Christians all believe in the very same "god," which is God Almighty.
   
   So far as "should we require our politicians to have faith in God?" -- with all due respect, that question should only be posed to dummies.

   It's a moot point. We already can, if we choose. Should a plurality of the voters in a democratic society make it a criterion for their ballots, then only candidates presenting that characteristic could be elected. As a matter of fact, in the US, all presidents so far, and all but a relative handful of congressmen, governors, legislators, mayors, and other elected officer have indeed claimed it as an asset, so I would say politicians know it's required and take pains at least to make it appear as if they satisfy the requirement. There's no reason to codify the rule.

   No!  Absolutely not.  Our country is founded on the separation of church and state.  We've got plenty of world history to prove the founding fathers were right to separate the two.

   HOW would you accomplish this?  Would you have a Constitutional amendment that said,  "Any candidate for office must claim that they have faith in God"??????  WHAT purpose would that serve, EXCEPT, maybe, to assure that many "politicians" would be willing to lie in order to be candidates in an election.
   
   The idea, on its surface, is pretty far-fetched.  From MY point of view, I find it not only unthinkable, but terribly offensive and undesireable, since it smacks of "theocracy"... and that is EXACTLY one criterion that I do NOT want to have in my country's political arena!!!!!!!
